my father threw me a curve ball today by saying that he might consider buying a new car - more than that he then compounded this bombshell by saying if he does he'd want it to be 100% EV <quote> "...I'll not miss going to a petrol station!..." </end quote>

Having had 40 years of various Escorts/Focuses/Mondeos (he used to work for Ford) he's open to the idea of other brands and, in particular, likes the Ionic5 terms of looks/size and the price hasn't terrified him. Although we have a MYLR he's not keen on the Tesla as he feels it's quite a harsh ride (is this an EV thing?).

I was just after ideas about what sort of ideas to throw his way? Budget would be mid-£40's and this is projected to be his last car...

We have a 5yr old Kona EV - absolutely love it.
We had a test drive in the Ionic 5 - pretty impressive, although it is quite a large vehicle.
If he liked it, I doubt he would be disappointed.

I would suggest something like a 2023 EQE 300 fully loaded with air suspension (so smooth ride) and driving assistance package (road trips more relaxing) - they should give 300 miles of range

They depreciate like a stone and I suspect MB dealers may struggle to find buyers for these relatively quickly as used cars, so I would offer way under the advertised price.

This one is up for £48k, I would offer £40k

Apparently the Model 3 suspension is softer than the Y. I've not been able to compare them but my M3 isn't bad at all and the new Highland is meant to be better. Just set a test drive up for him.

The new Ford Explorer which shares the VW ID4 platform? Starts at £40K and it's sort of a Ford. The new Puma EV is coming out soon too.

If your dad likes the Ioniq 5, how about a lightly used Genesis GV60?

I like that thought - the issue is that he is risk averse (which I understand) so as nice as the GV is there is an issue with dealerships for servicing etc. That said it is something I'll suggest to him (as well as the EV6, though that may be a little big/tall)

I had a further chat and there's another stipulation - no saloons. This is a shame as I think he'd like the EQE, certainly on the comfort side of things and the EQC/EQE SUV would be too high for my mum

If he likes the look, size etc of the Ioniq5, how about an Ioniq5? Nothing wrong with it, it's one of the better EVs out there.

TBF I am thinking that - just seeing ideas for alternatives just for the sake of choice if there's something decent he's not thought about.

Reviews for the Renault Scenic E-Tech seem decent.

The 22 onwards facelift are an improvement.

The new highlands are supposedly much better.

Suggest he test drive the current one.

Does he have to buy new? My FIL recently got an Ioniq 5. Top spec one. 3k miles and 30k. It’ll be his last car as well but that was a massive saving over new. It’s a lovely car.

If you want a similar model, take a look at a Kia EV6.
Other left field option would be an MG4.

As an aside, all of those offer V2L - the ability to use the car as a giant battery for big loads. See this thread for an interesting discussion on that, written by a fella I know who has been into MANY EVs over MANY miles and now settled on the MG4!
That forum is also a great place to ask any questions about EVs.

If it's a Ford he wants, surely the Mach-E should be on the list?

Recently been test driving and these are my thoughts in the cars I looked at. My opinions so others will be different.

Polestar 2, this is the one I ordered, ride is quite hard, think sporty BMW or Mercedes, lovely seats. Controls and drive very similar to an ICE car.

Volvo XC40, second choice, comfortable ride lovely seats! Raised driving position and easy get in and out of. Same controls as the Polestar.

Mustang Mach e, third choice, comfortable ride, only 2 way electric lumbar which wasn’t perfect. Raised driving position and ICE car controls.

Tesla model Y, ride was very stiff, Tesla let me have one for a day and by the end of it I was a cripple, not sure if it was seats, suspension or my dodgy back. Controls were very futuristic, everything done through the screen which you could get used to.

KIA EV6, lovely looking thing but the interior felt quite low rent and for a big car it didn’t have a lot of head room. Didn’t drive it.

Hyundai Ioniq 5, really wanted to like this one given its styling but there was just something about the dash and layout I didn’t get on with. Real shame as I wanted to love it, it was my first choice when I got the list.

Also consider the depreciation on these is very steep so it might be worth looking at a 6/12 month old car to try and take the sting out of it. Mine was a company car so I just had to choose from a list and not worry about what it would be worth in 3 years time.

he must be the only person in the country (possibly the world!!) to whom the Mustang name-plate is a turn-off (and that's all of them from 1964.5 onwards!!). Strange old stick!

To be fair, if you covered up the badge he wouldn't recognise it as a Mustang anyway - because it isn't one biggrin

Excellent!
As I said back in July: If he liked it, I doubt he would be disappointed.
Report back after he’s had it a month smile
