In my search for new cars. Im becoming dismayed at prices of 2nd hand cars so have been incrementally increasing budgets to find something i would say was decent value for money.

have discovered early 20/21 year polestar 2 dual motor long range's are now around 19k with 50/60k mileage.

for research purposes i test drove polestars demo 24 plater dual motor and really liked it. didnt get the cramped feeling inside that other people mention but maybe driving a z4 coupe for so long has conditioned me.

what are peoples feelings on used polestars at the current price point. Using the crude PCP final payment option to gauge future deprecation, They are estimating around they will be 10/11k in 4 years time.

The alternative would be a 2021 (china built) model 3. the model 3 does have the better range and charging network but i just see so many of them i dont get excited by them where as polestars still seem kinda cool whenever i see one.

I looked to replace my 2020 Model 3 with a P*2 SM LR.

I do like the look of them, but it was cramped inside compared to the Model 3 and felt heavy and a fair bit slower too. I did like the Google integration and hatch though. The potential real world 340 summer range was tempting, but I rarely charge away from home.

In the end I ordered a new Model 3 RWD, but in blue smile The lease cost was identical for me.

The older P*2s do seem like excellent VFM. If I was buying privately now, I would be looking at a Kia EV6.

Personal preference, nothing against a P*2.

What put me off a used Polestar was the warranty, which is not particularly long compared to the alternatives.

I had considered the EV6 but horror stories on line about 12v battery issues put me off that one.

Can this be solved by just replacing it, or is it an on going issue? Sorry, off topic a bit smile

I love my P2 and wouldn't hesitate at the price they are going for now. I had a similar decision to make between Tesla, EV6, Mach-e and Polestar albeit new rather than used. I found the Tesla very bland and common, the EV6 was very good but wasn't as nice to drive as the Polestar in non GT guise, the Mach-e was ok but the design just didn't excite me.

I would make sure you have the plus pack at a minimum as it makes the interior much nicer. It may also be worth looking at performance pack cars because they seem to be around the same price as those without but look better and have the brembo brakes and ohlins suspension. On this age of car the power will be the same as a non performance but it's less than £1k to get an OTA upgrade adding another 70bhp if you want.

Polestar do offer extended warranties so you may see some out there. I haven't heard of many issues though other than those caused by software which seem to have been resolved with updates.

only thing I heard about the performance packs was the ride was noticeably firmer. so was looking to avoid. seems most early dual motor's its rare to find without the plus and pilot pack. The plus pack seems mandatory for the panoramic roof. The pilot system was nice on the demo i drove but its one of those things i dont know how much i would use untill I have it.

Other concern is range. Seems real world winter range for the 78kw dual motor would be about 180 miles on motorway driving. My once a week trip to the office is 155 miles with no charging where I park. cutting it a little close but seems doable

The performance dampers are adjustable to be softer if you prefer. I like them adjusted around halfway and lots prefer them on the softer side. Either way, they do ride better than the standard ones.
The earliest cars will be the launch edition which came with Pilot and Plus as standard. I feel like I don't use much of the Pilot pack but you do get the fancy headlights and the 360 camera is handy.

I wouldn't worry about the range. Even driving like a maniac, I've never seen below 170 miles. If you preheat the climate while plugged in before leaving home that should also help extend it slightly.

The ride on the Performance Pack cars is not that harsh, and as said above, you can soften it if you want to. I'm glad I didn't go for a non PP car, as I was originally planning to do based on reviews etc.

Early P2s were given an extra year of warranty as well, so 4 years instead of 3.

My once a week trip to the office is 160 miles (round trip). 120 miles of that is dual carriageway.

I have a 2019 Model 3 Long Range. No heat pump.

It does the commute on 60% of the battery if i take it steady. 80% to 20%

If i put my foot down and make daft progress, sitting at 80+ on the motorway, nailing it out of junctions, etc then it's more like 70%.

Knock off a few % if it's cold. I only normally set the temp to 18-19 deg, and make use of the heated seat. I don't like cars being too hot inside, so the heat pump would be wasted on me!

I'm in the habit now of charging to 85% and not driving for economy at all. Normally arrive back with 15%-20% left.

For my usage the Model 3 is ideal. And for the cost (£19k) i can't think of anything better for the job.

Commute now costs about £3.50

HTH.

I’m in a similar position to the OP, looking for an EV to replace my Leaf which goes back to the lease company later this year.

Budget around 20k and am considering the P2, M3 or facelift MS. Other option is a new pre reg Leaf which can be had in Tekna spec for £16k. It’s the safe option and suits most of my needs but I’d like a bit better range for some longer trips (taking the bike away) Wife’s car is an EQB on SS so I could use that but I’d prefer to put the miles on an owned car as we will probably use the mileage allowance on hers.

P2 - looks great and ticks a lot of boxes but at 6’4 I really need to sit in one and check the seating position/space. Hatchback is a real bonus for chucking a bike in the back. I’d be looking at slightly higher mileage cars (60k) so not sure on reliability going forward.

M3 - I don’t really need the supercharger network and the saloon shape makes it a bit less practical but not a deal breaker. There are so many around that prices are pretty good but I think residuals will suffer more than the Polestar. Would want the refresh model with sport wheels but there are a few around in budget.

Model S - Great for interior space but looking dated inside now. Possibly a few things to go wrong that could get expensive?

Or get a new Leaf. Absolutely fine for most of my use but as said, I want to do a few longer trips and it’s be nice to have the flexibility of a car with better range. Also I’ve had mine 3 years now so just want a change.

still doing research on P2's. apparently launch cars had the manufacturer warranty extended to 4 years from 3. this was done for all cars ordered in 2020. so some 2021 delivered cars may have warranty to 2025. but i think there is a mileage limit of 60k.

the initirial 3(4) year warranty can be extended for 3 years for £1199 but this needs to be done before warranty expires. so i think it will be hit and miss what cars have what. battery is 8 years/100k for all

I've been looking at these recently. You can pick up an early LR DM with Plus/Pilot packs for £500dep and £250-300 a month on PCP.

My only concern would be them being out of warranty. Are there many common issues with them to be worried about?

There have been issues with noisy front strut mounts, which is common to XC40s as well. Other than that it's mainly software glitches, with a few cars seeming to need regular reboots. Seven months in with my late '00 car I've not had any issues at all.

I've had an Aircon compressor changed; other than that, nothing major.

The Infotainment systems crash maybe twice a year; a very simple reboot is all that is needed.

There was an update two years ago where all the UK cars changed to km instead of miles for a few weeks hehe

I haven't had any mechanical issues. I had a "propulsion system failure" message last year but the tech who came out could find nothing wrong, it reset itself within 24 hours and never came back so likely a software glitch.

Where is this from? Definitely not from Polestar directly? Keen to know thanks as I’m looking for a daily EV

Thanks for the info - it’s a shame you can only extend the warranty at the 36 month point regardless of when the original warranty ends. Can’t imagine any of the cars coming off 36 months leases will have been extended. There doesn’t seem to be any horror stories with these which is promising but I guess time will tell. I’d probably take a chance with no warranty anyway.

I was looking at another thread on these and a couple of months ago someone posted examples of some P2s for sale - similar cars from the same dealer are now about £1k less so I might hold off until later in the year.

Car360 in Cannock normally has some of the cheaper cars and PCP rates. Have a look on AT and play around with the finance examples. They don’t have any around £20k today (£21k car sold today)

At the time I looked into it, Kia didn’t seem to have narrowed down the cause. The fix was just to replace the 12v battery (although at one point there were lead time issues). The problem was that there was no warning that the issue was going to occur.
