Our vehicle use has drastically changed of late and considering a change from our 2022 a3 tdi, I can live with the dpf regens a quick blast up the dual to look after it. It still returns 40 mpg locally arpund 7 mile commute each way and 70mpg on a longer spin few times a month

I'm considering a change and like the look and sound of the a3 45 competition plug in hybrid with 245bhp.
But it gets mixed reviews saying the mpg overall is not all that great..
But intrested in something along those lines.

What other vehicles should I consider the Mrs wants a Sub type so will consider one of them to.
Any help advice welcome

If you have a £20k budget, get a used EV. The hardest think will be to forget your preconceptions - the majority are a big step up from an A3.
As to what model to recommend, only you know your budget, needs, wants and likes.

Bigger than an A3 but doesn't seem that large in the flesh, we've recently got a GLC, the 300de plug in hybrid. It's giving us 60 miles on electric with no problem, diesel range is huge. Stupidly expensive to buy outright but it feels like a class act when you're in it.

Hyundai Tucson\Kia Sportage both come as a Hybrid and PHEV flavours, having had a Sportage as a hire car for a week I can see why they are popular, mine decent inside with plenty of kit as standard.

A Cupra Formentor might be worth a look, basically the same platform as the A3 and there's a couple of PHEV hybrid engine options

Tesla Model 3 long range well within your budget. Quick and would demolish your journeys for a fraction of the cost?

An EV would probably be your best bet.
