Which EV to pick?
Discussion
Hi all,
I currently own a 2015 420d xDrive Grand coupe. But family is getting bigger (2nd child due soon) and hence I need a slightly bigger car.
Although I love driving my Grand coupe, I want to go EV as I've looked into the numerous benefits there are to grab from it.
I've set myself a budget of 20k and having had a browse I've shortlisted a number of options:
2017/2018 Tesla model S - Fast car. I like the looks of it, although it is a hatchback it has a big boot. Technology is still not too old, when compared to alternative EVs. Great charging network!
Jaguar I Pace - can get a good deal for the money. I like the idea of moving to an 'SUV- but this looks like a rather small SUV - and all the feedback I see online is about how nice it is to drive it and the incar tech is not bad...for Jaguar standards. But then I came across the Audi e-Tron.
Audi E-Tron - I just love how it looks - both the exterior and more so the interior, it comes with air suspensions as standard. However, reviews state the drive is poor, not fun. But I wonder how much would I notice it?!
Having come from a 420xDrive, I have to admit I like a car that drives well. However, I wonder whether I would really give it much thought, if I drove the E-Tron around with my 4 people family around the country.
What do you guys think?! Any other suggestions?
Cheers
JC

I’ll second the Model 3. Whilst not externally larger than the 4, both cabin space and luggage space are massively more spacious.
Our family of four plus luggage easily fit in my Model 3 Performance, which is much faster than my F33 440i.
Battery warranty is 8yr/120,000 miles for the Long Range/Performance variants, and yes 4yr/50,000 miles for the basic limited warranty.

Anything that isn’t a Tesla will piss you off RE charging away from home. We have a model Y and a highland model 3 both long range. Excellent cars.
Beg to differ. 22k in my Polestar 2 and never had an issue. Currently on holiday in the Lakes and charging has been a breeze. I’ve recently bought a 2019 Tesla Model S. it’s fast, quiet, comfortable, has lots of toys and a massive boot. It is also surprisingly wide (and low, if you’ve hurt your back…). Some of the panel gaps aren’t the best, but I can’t see those from the inside.
The Supercharger network is brilliant, it just works and the car routes you automatically and will re-route if the chargers are busy.
The purchasing experience from Tesla was, er, unusual - all online, didn’t see the car until the day of pickup so had no idea what condition it was in, and their handover was woeful and they clearly hadn’t done the multi-point inspection beforehand.
We also looked at the Etron but they seemed very expensive, albeit a very nice cabin, but with a very poor range.

Just bought an e Tron. Both wfh. Do about 100 miles a week, so range wasn’t important to me.
Plus points:
I love the looks (mine is a black edition with quite a few nice options), inside and out.
Seats are brilliant.
Very spacious everywhere.
Tech is superb imo.
Ride is amazing on air suspension.
Brilliant around town or motorway.
Personally, for a 2.5 tonne suv I think the drive, handling etc. is very good.
Can extend Audi warranty even if it’s lapsed. Only £450 a year. I’ve bought it for peace of mind.
Down sides:
Will probably continue to deprecate quicker than other cars.
Range isn’t great - I have the 55. Currently getting about 150 miles from an 80% charge.
Unlike a lot of EVs it’s not that quick. 0-60 is 5.8 seconds. Whilst not slow by most standards, not the pace you get with a lot of EVs these days.

Spacious is not a word I would use to describe it. In fact it’s almost laughable how little space there is inside compared to how big it is outside. Reverse tardis. I’d be surprised if it was bigger than a 4 series grand coupe.
Tech - almost everything was an option. Mine is a base technik and doesn’t have things like keyless entry or radar cruise. This is on a £70k vehicle.
I do agree that it rides very well for a lardy SUV.
Agree, range is poor but same as you, it works for us as mainly wfh.
I’d actually say 5.8s 0-60 is not bad for something that weighs nearly 2.6 tonnes. It certainly shifts. But I doubt anyone is buying something like this for those kinds of stats.
My biggest peeve is the crap roof design. Water runs off the roof onto the back seats when they’re open. Ridiculous design flaw.

Two years ago maybe, not any more.Stop with the nonsense please. No marque is better or worse than any other when it comes to public charging ( unless you have an old "free for life" Tesla ofc).
OP. I personally feel Tesla's are a little "white goods" and wouldn't get one unless a bargain. However they are a great used choice due to the number available and warranty

There is zero doubt that the Tesla Supercharger network is the best in the Uk, by some distance. Cheaper, faster, in-built SatNav that will route you via one if you'll need it and preconditions as you approach for faster charging. To suggest that the other options with their multiple apps, issues with card payments and often slower speeds is just wrong. It's a significant reason why Tesla have done as well as they have.

The app thing used to bother me too, but I can't remember the last time I used any app other than Octopus Electroverse - which activates most modern chargers and bills direct to my home power account and normally triggers a discount too. My car's nav (BMW) does all the same charging calcs and availability info etc as the Tesla's too.
If there is an argument that Tesla's are still somehow a little easier to public charge then I'm happy to hear it, but there's no way the difference is significant enough these days to warrant buying a Tesla for that reason alone. You either like and desire to own a Tesla, or you don't.
