From April 2025 EVs will have to pay VED (Road tax).

If you have a EV registered between 1 April 2017 and 31 March 2025 then consider renewing the tax early on-line this month. That will reset the renewal date giving you the maximum period of exemption.
Contrary to some information you do not have to SORN first, just renew on-line.

Sorry - You'll need to explain that strategy...

You will renew for £0 in March 2025. Any renewal after the end of March 2025 will cost £180. So you potentially get 11m longer on £0 VED than you would if you had to renew in April.

You are right, you could renew early in March 2025. I would probably forget so doing it now means it will automatically flag up for renewal next year in March.

Ah, I see what you mean... Looks an interesting wheeze, but won't the DVLA start pro-rata charging from renewals?

Mine was first registered 31/03/22....so I guess I get a year at the lower rate.

I’ve just leased one, so had assumed this was the lease companies problem. A quick check of the T&Cs suggest that they cover the VED costs based on the price at the point of signing the lease, but that I’m responsible for the cost difference should the VED increase.

Hope they get their arse in gear and tax/deliver it in the next couple of weeks. That way I’ll only be on the hook for 1 year.
