I’ve got a none tethered ev charging point installed at my house. When I first had an ev I was doing all my charging at work and hardly ever using the home one. I’ve got another one now and doing all my charging at home. I know it’s not a major deal but I’m getting bored of getting the cable out of its casing and plugging in then coiling it back up etc. especially when it’s been raining. So was after something similar to a hose pipe reel or similar with housing case. So I can just leave the cable plugged in on my home charger and then hang it back in its case when not is use. I can’t seem to find anything like this for untethered chargers though. Just tethered chargers that come with housing for the cable. Does anyone have any ideas please? Thank you.

Is the charger on an external wall or in a garage?

You could of course swop out the charger for a tethered one and eBay the untethered version.

Just sling it in the boot?

Has worked for me for the last 4 years and I charge 4-5 times a week.

I have a Kuga PHEV and I only use a 13 Amp plug granny charger and I just trail the lead under the garage door and hang the charger cable over the fence when not in use.

Can you just leave your charger cable permanently connected to the charger and hang the loose cable up somewhere when not in use?

If you are concerned about live mains connections then as I understand it the terminals on the charger connector are not live unless the control pins complete a detection circuit and the charger detects that it is connected.

Thanks guys.

Charger is outside in the middle pillar of a double garage with two single garage doors - if that makes sense. So want to leave it plugged in permanently to that but houses in something so the plug end doesn’t get soaked and filthy etc. Like I say, bit like the housing units you can get for hose pipes.

I wouldn't coil up the charge cable too tight when charging the car.

Indeed smile

None of my EV cables have been returned to their storage bag/case, they just get slung in, even if damp - it hasn't caused any problems. We have a car boot-tidy thing which we bought as it has a useful space to pop the charging lead into, but truthfully we never really made an effort to use it.

If this upsets anyone, we also sling muddy wellies in the boot too - it gets hoovered twice a year by some nice chaps at the local garden centre. I'm not going to see them out of a job by selfishly keeping my car clean and orderly whistle
