I like them a lot, but I like fast ICE, and fast bikes.
Yet, with green this and that, is it right that an EV is built to be fast, and is so heavy? surely an EV should be light and eco. Looks like trying to look green while not actually being green. Thoughts? I'm not a green type of person btw, so no dog in this fight.

Troll?

NO, they're just better altogether than ICE vehicles and despite weight some are faster accelerating than the fastest bikes. ICE is dead like its dinosaur tech and fuel biggrin

I assume you have a solution to energy density that doesn’t involve weight?

I can’t wait for your new EV car to come out.

Good thing Benz et al didn't give up when someone pointed out their "cars" were slower than a horse and carriage!

EV development and manufacturing is costly (at the moment). So the manufacturers must concentrate on premium models with a premium price. In time the costs will come down and smaller lighter vehicles will become available (as far as battery technology allows).

Add the 10,000 kg of lifetime fossil fuel needed to power an ICE car and its 'lightness' suddenly disappears, because that's what the planet sees at a system level.

Here we go. Haven't we already got enough ICE vs EV threads on the go?

In 1903 the fastest car in the world was the electric Baker Torpedo.

And yet electric cars were still out-competed by petrol, because they were much more practical and flexible.

I think there’s definitely room for a purpose built lightweight pure drivers EV

I love an engine as much as the next person but I’m not one who subscribes to the theory that it’s necessary for a drivers car.

In fact the razor sharp and hysteresis free response is a major plus, weight is greater but distribution is better, and actually I find the lack of engine noise and vibration means in some circumstances you can actually hear and feel the limits of the car a bit more clearly

Here we go again, seems like a daily occurance that one of these threads crops up, getting boring.

Using ICE vs BEV in the same vein as the car vs horse and cart, is the most ridiculous comparison used by imbeciles on the internet.

Whisper it quietly but I really don't give a toss how green or not my EV is.

Wouldn't even make a list of 50 priorities for my car.

Manufacturers are generally sensible enough to build what people want, not necessarily what the government or the Green Party want.

As imbecilic as missing the point by a country mile?

EVs are heavy because big batteries are heavy. Weight does not negatively affect range very much, particularly because of regenerative breaking means most of the kinetic energy can be recovered.

And big batteries generally allow high discharge powers, therefore they get fast. Why wouldn't you take advantage of that for more sales.

There is no such thing as a 'green' car. Just saying - unless it's been parked up for a while and collecting moss.
The whole discussion about battery technology and energy density is interesting though.

Not as much as an IC car but not negligible and theres still a virtuous circle of smaller batter/smaller car/less drag and less weight/less power needed/lighter power electronics

At the moment there’s a big focus on Range as the infrastructure is poor and that’s what’s driving the size and weight of the cars. I genuinely think as the infrastructure improves and you don’t have to worry about finding a charger the focus will change to cheaper/lighter

Oh god. Not this st again.

Missing what point? I want a comfortable family bus that can do 4 hour at speed before it wants a charge.

It doesn’t need to handle. It doesn’t need steering feel.

I don't know why everyone is shooting this down, it's a valid point, albeit probably made before.

There's only so many resources, so more batteries to create bonkers performance doesn't seem sustainable - range maybe yes but some of these trucks and SUVs don't need to be record breaking to 60.

Is there even any plan for recycling batteries?

No, we’re just going to throw a massive pile of complex tech into landfill when it’s at 70% capacity.

I’m looking forward to more half dead car batteries being available to throw into the shed and run the house off.
