Hello

I am thinking of getting an mokka e which has a range of 200 miles. I do 40 miles a day round trip commuting but i dont have a driveway etc. However, just behind me is a Tesco with 4 public charging points and no parking time limit. So i was thinking of leaving it there for 8 hrs to get a full charge. Does anyone have any experience of running an electric vehicle solely from a public charger, and if so does it work out any cheaper then a mokka 1.2 petrol for example. I would only be using tescos which is a 7kw charger

They may not have a parking time limit at present, but if people start parking for 8 hrs, how long before they put a limit?

With Podpoint you’ll be paying 49p/kWh so probably £6 to do your daily 40 miles frown

Most tesco car park are anpr controlled now so you'll probably not be able to leave all day.

The petrol 1.2 surely has to be cheaper to both buy and run and a lot more convienent over leaving an electric version on a public charger for 8 hours?

Generally petrol/diesel is cheaper if you don't have home charging facilities. You'd need to work out cost of the Tesco charger for 200 (call it 140 in real life) range vs the same cost to run the petrol version, assume you'd get at least 40mpg & current petrol prices = £22 for 140 miles.

I've no idea how much it would be charge an EV at a public point.

You need at home charging. If your Tesco is anything like our local supermarkets the charging points will be out of action for weeks at a time.

Also, are you sure about the range? According to here (https://ev-database.org/uk/car/1586/Vauxhall-Mokka-e) the range on the motorway varies from 115 miles in VV cold conditions to 145 miles in the summer. It will go further in town.

Which is about what I am paying doing 50 mpg in my 2 litre diesel, with diesel around £1.50/ litre.

Also, how long will that remain free? From what I’ve read, loads were free and then started charging. Badaboom.

No. Don't do that.

There was an article on one of the daytime tv programmes the other day about a Tescos that had something like like a 3 hour limit to the car park but outside opening hours the limit was 15 or 30 mins. That included the use of the charging bays.

Oh I forgot to mention that the worst part of your plan is that you’ll be stuck in a Mokka.

Not sure about public charging but it could work if you have an Electroverse account or similar.

Looking at used prices, you can get a 12 month old Mokka e for the same price as a 1.2, so going electric may be worthwhile, given it's faster, more powerful and will be nicer to drive.

The big one will be charging though, so make sure you do your homework.

Check out Electrifying on YouTube as they have a top 10 worst depreciating EVs currently. The Mokka is No. 1, so is the biggest bargain but you might find something else for the same money.

Im not sure the insurance company would be too happy with you leaving the car in a public car park for 8 hours a day

Tesco PodPoint aren't free any more.

At 15p/mile on the PodPoints it's not ideal!

Don't buy a Vauxhall or Peugeot EV. I have an e-Corsa and have this problem crop-up intermittently:

The first time left me unable to use it for 45 mins. The last time over 3 hours stuck by the side of the road.

A quick Google suggests it's not unusual. Vauxhall had mine back to look at it but found no fault and then refused to contact Vauxhall HQ to see if any others had been reported. They were just disinterested in trying to resolve it.

I'm leasing mine so I've agreed to use it until it fails again, at which point I will send it back.

It's not something I would want to do.

The range on the Mokka e will be around 130 miles around this time of year; this would cost £22.54 on a pod point charger, the equivalent of 38mpg.

If you used a rapid charger for whatever reason, you would be looking at £39.00 for a full charge, the equivalent of 21mpg.

This would get slightly better in the summer, but with the extra hassle of charging and leaving your car in a public car park overnight (insurance will go up), it is not worth it, in my opinion.

We also have a Tesco walking distance from us. We use to do similar when they were still free a couple of years ago.

Taking the piss really and not worth it for us now you have to pay but we never had any issues beyond them not being available.

Less of an issue now they're not free I presume.
