Hi All,

I’m looking at getting a Smart EQ as a runaround but have read that the Smart app is troublesome. I need to schedule a window of charge via the app and am wondering if this is difficult in practice?

I’m an Intelligent Octopus user, which is linked to my Tesla M3. Appreciate 2 cars can’t be used ‘intelligently’ on this tariff, and the Smart is not compatible anyhow, according to their checker.

Simply need the ability to schedule the car to control its charge for a set time easily. Anyone with real world experience out there?

One possible alternative would be to use a three-pin charger with a timer on the socket (eg Tapo P105). It depends how intensively the car's going to be used.

I've got a ForTwo EQ which I have been charging using a wall charger but am due to collect an iPace on Wednesday so my plan for the Smart car is as above on the 3 pin plug, given it will get to 100% overnight due to the small size of the battery.

I'm currently on Octopus Tracker but will switch to Intelligent for the cheaper rates and my (possibly incorrect) understanding from scanning the Octopus thread on here is that the cheap rate applies to all power consumed when the compatible car/charger is connected so the Smart car may also charge on the cheap rate which would be handy - but I may have got that wrong.

In answer to your question the app is problematic and occasionally prone to freezing for days on end so not ideal if you need to schedule charge times etc -fantastic cars for what they are though, I've done 18k miles in just over 12 months in mine.

Can you schedule the charger instead? Have it only charging during the cheap hours and leave the Tesla to schedule itself. Should work ok.

Firstly, thanks to everyone for your responses.

I like the idea of using a home charger, coupled with a timer if needed. Sounds like the app is certainly sub-par and have been spoilt by Tesla in this regard.

Test drove a ForTwo EQ yesterday. The ev powertrain suits it. Forgot how comically manoeuvrable they are. As a city runabout this should tick the box 🙂
