Cybertruck Delivery Launch Event
Discussion
Apparently this thing exists because (one of his many, many) children once piped up "daddy, why doesn't the future look like the future?" when five years old.
Might explain the ridiculousness of it all...
It Tesla had managed to create its origami method of creating the structure by folding the panels and bolding the assembles to that exoskeleton, then I would have been impressed. But this is now just a traditional monocoque with steel body panels. No meaningful innovation - even the much ridiculed windscreen wiper is just old tech.
Invent something, man, if you want the future to look like the future...

When originally announced: $40k to $70k, range of 500 miles, tow up to 6350kg.
Now: $61k to $100k, range of 340 miles, tow 4990kg.
How do they get away with that? Surely anyone who paid a deposit (and therefore funded the development) would want it back?
Or do Musk’s followers just accept it?

I am enjoying the hatred this generated.
Likewise. No such thing as bad publicity, as the saying goes.
And if anyone doesn’t think Musk knows exactly what he’s doing with his halting, awkward presentation, they’re as clueless as he thinks they are.
I’m no fan of Musk, but he’s a shrewd guy.

Not a "Musk follower" by any stretch. Had a Tesla fro 2019-21 and in no rush to get another, but thought some balance might b useful. Now: $61k to $100k, range of 340 miles, tow 4990kg.

On the question of range there's an optional range extending battery pack that delivers the 500 miles originally promised apparently.

On the question of cost, it was announced 4 years ago and I recall reading quite a lot about inflation in the interim?
This was back in Feb this year
The deposit was $100, full refundable.

I don't understand why this isn't a thing in general. If you do 100 miles a day usually, but need to be able to do several hundred occasionally without having to stop for aaaaages to get it done, at the moment you pay thousands extra for a big lump of heavy battery that is generally not used. Wouldn't it be better if you could simply call in somewhere on the way, rent a bigger battery that just plugs in extra range for that journey and then you crack on.Lower weight, lower cost, more efficient use of the batteries. You could buy your own extender and leave it plugged into your solar in the garage to power the house as another option.

Imagine GM revealed a concept and said it would have 500 miles of range, a 6 tonne towing capacity, would cost $50k, and then took $100 deposits to fund the development. On the question of range there's an optional range extending battery pack that delivers the 500 miles originally promised apparently.

4 years later they turn out the production model which has 350 miles of range, a 4.5 tonne towing capacity and costs $70k.
They’d be laughed at and probably sued.
Somehow Tesla get away with it!
I watched some YT videos from the event. I really don't know what to make if it all..
On a positive note, nobody else makes cars designed for mainstream sale that are this unique and interesting anymore, so kudos for that Elon.
On the downside, there's a reason no one else makes such unusual cars anymore - it's because it's fking weird!!
I'll eat my words if it turns out this thing is genuinely as capable as certain other electric trucks are these days - that's some stiff competition though.

- Choose the right model and options and it will do 500 miles.
- High inflation is a thing you may have experienced yourself in the past 4 years and has affected everything, including new car prices as per the snip above.
- No idea on towing capacity
I foresee a few youtubers getting hold of them and "putting them through their paces."
They'll be tested to distruction (which is non-sensical, but attracts views), then the interest will rapidly die off.
I give it a three year production run, if that, in limited numbers. Say, 250,000 by end of run.

That leading edge of the front wing is horrific, it's going to kill anyone who has the misfortune to be hit as a pedestrian.
That's simply a no fks given for safety of anyone outside the thing.
The laminated side windows and no mechanical external system to open the doors may see a few people off too.

Kinda have to give credit to the marketing dept for this one...
