With a flick of a lever, push of a button, you reverse the direction of the motors. Is that simply the case? If so, what limits the reversing speed of the car?

They will be electronically limited.

Nissan Leaf mk1 holds a record for speed in reverse (the video does mention taking a limiter off though), and it was reversed up Goodwood hill in 1:37

My old Unimog had 16 gears. It had a separate lever for forward and reverse. So you could select reverse and then go up through the box. The only limit was your bottle and physics.

Were not Daf 33s capable of same speed backwards as forwards thanks to the Variomatic gearbox? They were certainly said to be at the time!

Edit to add link to some wonderful lunacy from the Netherlands::

How about the Austin Champ , used by the British Army , same performance forwards and reverse , seriously dodgy in reverse. Think it had an epicyclic gear box.

I think some of the old micro cars reversed by running the 2 stroke engine backwards.
