On TV the other day, there's a company that goes around cutting a slot in the pavement for your EV cable in case you live in a flat etc. I was wondering what happens when the weather turns cold? Can you still pull the cable out with ice frozen around it? Will the slot end up cracking due to water getting in, freezing and expanding like a pot hole? What will stop the scally wags vandalising them and running off with the cable as they must be worth a few quid?

My house is old and every house in the street has a metal slit in the pavement which I assume was for drainage in to the gutter. They work great for putting charging cables in.

I guess they could freeze up in the winter, but I've never seen them do it. Generally the fact they are for drainage means they are angled to let water run off.

Snow maybe could block it, but it's not very deep.

I assume this company you speak of is copying this old design. I've always thought that it's the perfect solution, of course it only works if you can park in front of your house, but we are a nice street and people are chill with this.

Don't think this will ever happen where we live. Terraced house on a walkway, it's 100m to the closest parking bay (50m tarmac walkway and 50m grass bank) and my usual bay is 150m away (50m tarmac walkway, 50m grass bank and another 50m or so private concrete road servicing a garage block). No good to me unless the council deem to put in some chargers on the edge of the road and have some way of tying whoever is using the charger to a particular house and be able to bill as though the car was outside the house and using our electricity. There are 20 houses in this close all with the same problem.

IIRC you can just remove the cable when not in use. The freezing issue isn't really one to worry about as there's a wide channel that is properly designed for this. The main issue is that, for private households, you can't reserve your parking space outside your house so a lot of the time you won't be able to use it.
