Which one shall I get?

My wife wants a car that is reliable, easy to drive, and easy to park. She has decided she would like an automatic. It needs to be petrol and 5 door. I am a big fan of Toyotas (we currently have a Corolla and a Yaris and only recently sold an Avensis and a Landcruiser) so I am thinking that a newer Auris would be perfect (it would be somewhere between 13- to 15 reg, budget of £15k)

Anyway the Auris hybrid seems a perfect choice. The only thing I'm wondering is whether to treat her to a CT200h. I think they're basically the same car with the Lexus being nicer on the inside but a couple of grand more expensive.

Any comments, especially from people with real-world experience of either, gratefully received.

I owned a 2014 auris hybrid for a year, and have also spent a couple of weeks driving the ct200.

Yes, they are the same car using the same engine. If you look at pictures of them you can see the similarities.

Lexus is more luxury with extra sound deadening, etc. As a result, very slightly slower than the auris due to extra weight.

Suspension on the lexis is very firm. Great if you want sporty, but the auris is more comfortable for cruising.

Only issue with both is catalytic converter theft, that was why I had to get rid of my auris.

Thanks and "ah crap!" biggrin

The sporty suspension - very good point - my wife prefers it soft.....

I've got a 2018 210k mile Auris. Only ever had routine servicing, except for a new hybrid system water pump and fluid change.

Just does what it says it will do. All day every day 60mpg. Fuel tank is a bit small at 45 litres and there's not masses of rear legroom.

£15k will get you a Corolla hybrid rather than an Auris.

Having had both, the Auris is undoubtedly a good car, comfy and reliable and good on fuel, but the Corolla is a LOT nicer inside and out, and even more economical.

You'll be looking at higher mileage examples, but most should still be under warranty (warranty extends by a year with each Toyota dealer service, up to 10 years old/100k miles).

If you can get the corolla in budget, it's a much better car than the auris or ct200.

I've had them several times as service loan cars when my auris was in.

Good suspension and the engine is one generation newer than the auris and ct200.

Only thing I found was the driving position is lower, with the seat height fully raised it was ok though.

On my auris, my average was 44mpg over the year. Same as my ordinary petrol golf. Most of my driving is motorway, but I could never get above 50. In the winter it would sometimes drop to 42mpg as the engine has to run to give you heat.

With the corolla, I only drove them a few times but was getting 50+ mpg on the motorway.

Thanks - for some reason I had assumed that the Corolla was just a facelift/rebadging exercise.

Whatever you buy, check it hasn't been a taxi. The Lexus is unlikely, but an Auris may have.
Check usual wear points etc. And MOT history. If every 6 months run away!

Yes, that's definitely good advice with pretty much all the Toyota hybrids. Minicabbers love them as they're ultra reliable and fuel efficient, so be on the lookout for evidence of taxi use.

I'd probably go for one of those CATLOC things tbh.

On just about any modern car there are post-cat sensors which would throw up an emissions error if the cat is removed. Not like the old 90s cars where there was just a single Lambda sensor fitted before the cat.

One reason I plumped for the more expensive Corolla vs another Auris was that the newer cars have a much less accessible cat. I don't imagine that the Corolla is entirely immune to cat theft but it's a lot less likely than on the Auris or earlier versions of the Prius.

Don't know about the Auris, but the boot on the CT200 is comedy small, especially if you play golf (Lexus stereotype I know!).

It's a second car so mainly just used for shopping/local trips. looking at it i think it should be fine smile

The Auris makes so much sense from a VFM point of view but I'm very tempted by the CT200h

Unfortunately it's linked to the hybrid system so required. You can fit an ebay version that's £150 to try and deter theft but they only last a year.

The catlocs are useless, I had one on my auris along with a tilt alarm.

Apart from reducing your ground clearance, catlocs are easily cut through with pocket power tools. They only add seconds to the theft.

It's a bit bigger on the Auris, but not huge.

The ct200 has an unusually high boot floor that I couldn't see a reason for.

Would that not be for the batteries?

Hmm...that's annoying.

maybe e live in a good area? As I mentioned before we've had several other Toyotas and none have suffered from CAT theft.....

It's confusing as they both have the same battery pack, but the auris manages a deeper boot.

They must have packaged the car differently around the boot for styling reasons.
