Help please, I’m new to all this and considering my first ev.

I’ve been looking at home charging and read as below

My electrician tells me that it may be difficult to get a cable for the higher power chargers to my garage so I guess it’ll have to be a 32amp. Then I see them listed as Kw???

I’m looking at a Mustang MachE

A 32 Amp charger is a 7KW and is standard home charger terrirtory unless you are on 3 phase.

There is always a way to get the cable there but there are obviously issues with how much damage you want to have to fix in routing the cable and also voltage drop based on length of cable runs.

I suspect that quote is from an American site?
They seem to go up to 80A, but at a lower voltage.

The charger is part of the car, the thing on the wall is just 'supply equipment'.
You won't see anything more than 32A per phase for AC charging in the UK.

I thoroughly approve of this kind of charger for your home.

With UK houses its like this.

230-240V grid voltage x 32A gets you ~ 7400W or 7.4kW

Isn’t there faster charging available?

If you have three phase you can do a max of 22kW (3x32A) but not all cars will do 11kW/22kW

Yes, if you have 3-phase supply to your home. Other than that - only via public chargers.

Do you really need it faster? Home users generally plug in the charger and then set a scheduled charge for when the cheap rate period is. E.g. Octopus Intelligent gives you 6 hours at 7.5p. 6h x 7.4kW = 44.4kWh or about 180 miles of range.

Comes down to “need” vs “useful to have”

I installed 3 phase for flexibility. I had to dig to put cables in the ground anyway so figured I may as well upgrade the supply and run 5-core instead of 3-core SWA. Most of the time I can meet daily mileage requirements with a granny charger but once in a while its handy to be able to charge two cars simultaneously at 11kW each inside a cheap off peak window whilst also keeping the DNO happy.

Next car will have 22kW which provides even greater flexibility.

The Mach E has a max AC charging speed of 11kW (3 phase 16A converter) so anything else is pointless. That said I went for a 3x32A for 22kW to future proof

Bump.

I test drove a Mustang Mach - E and Jaguar iPace yesterday. The Ford looks favourite at the moment.

It’s looking like getting the charger installed in my garage will cost around £1500 which is putting me off somewhat. I’d need to save a LOT of petrol cost to get that back. Awaiting detailed quotes.

I’ll just add that the Jaguar dealership was awful. The salesman had little knowledge of the product, terrible people skills and took us out in a filthy demonstrator.

Have you got a breakdown on the quote? What charger are they fitting? Is the route from the board to the install location tricky?

I was getting quote the other week on a charger and they were £900-1100 mark. The board was at one end of the garage and the charger was going on the inside wall of the garage at the other end. In the end I installed it myself.

Not that I'm a fan of EVs and need to encourage you, but my first, last and only new car in 2001 cost me £40,000 and a back of envelope calculation revealed I probably spent another £40,000 in fuel alone, driving it 210,000 miles over 18 years. Surely buying an EV shouldn't come down to comparing the cost of the charger with filling up with petrol!?

I’ve been doing this. Got quotes about £1100 to £1200 mark with charge points in the £750RRP ballpark. I’ve needed to upgrade my consumer unit in the garage so also have a bill for £516 for that fitted. The consumer unit really did need an upgrade though as long overdue.

I would suggest checking for local sparks with experience in EV CP installations. They might be some negotiations to be had. I’ve moved to OVO for the Anytime EV charging at 10ppkw. If you do too you would need either a compatible car or an OHME or Indra CP.

I wouldn't amortize it over the life of one car either - you're putting the electrical infrastructure in place to charge any car in the future. It's a bit like having to spend some money digging in some ducts for new fibre or uprating your electrics for any other long-term purpose. You either think it's worth it or you don't. I spent considerably but took the view that it was long-term future-proofing of my home.

Is there a company car / business angle? EV charging for company cars can be installed at employees' homes without any BIK arising.

My charger cost about £1K to install. I've done 2000miles in the last month. In my old tuned RS7 that would have cost me getting on for a grand. I've spent precisely £60 on electricity to travel that 2000miles so I've nearly paid off the cost of my charger in a month in savings and I've had the car 2.5 years now.

For most people a 7.7 kW (32amp) charger is all you need. For a 4miles /kWh car that's 30 miles per hour, i.e for an overnight 10 hour charge that's 300 miles. Not many people regularly do more than 300 miles a day.

Also don't be suckered into buying 2 chargers if you have 2 cars. Out installer very decently advised us just to get a long cable as it's very unusual to have to charge 2 cars at the same time every night. A long cable means you can each have your own parking spot and just choose which one to charge.

Yep, as said you don't need to obsess over super-quick charging at home.
Our Polar 3.5kw charger is ten years old, and still works nicely, servicing two EVs here with no problem.
