Nice - decent range too, if you're not on a track!

240bhp..

They're playing nicely to not upset the performance of the hottest petrol variants I think! The 50kwh battery pack they have provides the current bandwidth to easily operate a more powerful single motor - I guess we'll see such a version of the car in the future.

The McMurtry (even allowing for it being a fan car) has already demonstrated that a pure track focused EV, with no real interest in 'range', can easily out-perform it's ICE equivalents. It won't take very much for Caterham to eventually deliver an EV track car that will topple the finest ICE cars they have ever created. This initial offering feels like a softly softly step towards the future. Softly softly because it's going to cause an upset in the community without doubt. It would be too much of an upset if in it's first iteration it was as rapid as it surely could be.

Linking to other conversations, this is a perfect example of a house battery that is also useful.

There can never be a point at which a non essential, luxury motor vehicle can ever be considered remotely environmentally friendly, they exist solely to consume resources for zero purpose other than fun. And this gets made worse when, like classic EV conversions, a battery is added to the mix that then sits in the garage doing absolutely nothing for almost the whole year other than steadily leaking electrons 24/7.

These are the batteries that need to be tied in to efficient home storage solutions. While mainstream EV manufacturers will wrestle for years yet over allowing renters to put additional wear and tear on battery packs that aren't theirs, people tend to own their classic cars, track cars or silly, fun cars so should have the right to decide how they use their battery, because, well, it's theirs. And legal absolutions at purchase to let them shouldn't be any great hurdle.

A Caterham EV would arguably be along the best house battery money could buy. biggrin
