Hi

Collecting our first EV in a month, and currently on the Octopus Flexible tariff.

I’m probably wrong, but did I once see a spreadsheet to calculate whether it’s worth moving to the Octopus Go tariff.

I strongly think it’s not going to be worth it, as our initial usage of the car is circa 75 miles a week, albeit with some preheating at times.

Last year annual electricity consumption was 2900 kWh.

Thanks very much.

Get the Octopus Watch App, it should link to your account and you can then compare the tariffs for your usage.

I've not had a problem with it, but even if it is a pain I think there a few other alternatives.

I started using Intelligent Octopus with my Golf GTE the week and I love it - Im 10p a unit for 23.30 to 5.30. then 43.37 for other times.

The car charging is scheduled by Octopus and I also run all high usage appliances at night as expected. for me it works but depends on personal usage

What other high energy items are you running after 2330?

I'm unsure if the reduced cost during the the night will offset the increased day time rate. I'll be charging about 10 hours a week.

We run the dishwasher and washing machine overnight, as well as the immersion heater so that we have a full tank of hot for when we wake up. Add to that the solar battery charges itself off the mains overnight too, allowing us to offset at least 6 hours of cheap rate leccy for peak-rate time of use.

We do however charge the wife’s Passat GTE every weeknight, and my Model 3 once a week.

I think charging the solar battery alone makes it a winner for you, that allows you to easily shunt most usage into cheap rate. Good work!

To the OP, understandably your question pops up on these forums quite often. I would say that Octopus Go + intelligent octopus almost always works out cheaper overall given that the average home uses about the same power as the average EV doing typical mileage. So already half of your power is cheap rate overnight charging, and of course you already use power for your home during the cheap rate hours too and it's always possible to shunt some other stuff into cheap rate hours too.

Worth doing the math's for sure though.
