Wireless Charging Trial
Discussion
This is very interesting and could be the beginnings of a solution for people without off-street parking and who don't need massive range: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-nottinghamsh...
[quote]Wireless charging for electric taxis waiting in their rank is to be trialled in Nottingham.
The government is putting £3.4m towards fitting five charging plates outside the city's railway station.
The six-month pilot project will see 10 electric taxis fitted with the necessary hardware and the scheme could be rolled out if successful.
Officials said electric vehicles were "vital" to improving city air quality and making charging convenient was key.
The Department for Transport said wireless charging was more convenient and avoided the clutter of cable charging points.

It may have its place for things like taxi ranks, but I don't think it's going to happen for mass home charging - it's just too expensive to install (both in terms of installing the charger and the hardware required in the vehicle) compared to a road-side cabled charging point. Obviously the price will come down with economies of scale, but digging up roads is always going to be expensive even if the hardware comes down.
ETA: If prices do drop to not much more than cabled chargers I can certainly see the appeal of having a pad on the garage floor though. As long as efficiency isn't too far off that of a cable.

Interesting bit about it here - https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/electric/what-is-ele... - explaining how 2 versions of the tech are in use in Formula E

The future of EV charging I think.
3.5 mil for 5 points, plus the girnormous cost of charging points in the remote highlands, etc, certainly wont be cheap all of us going electric, good idea I think for towns etc, but not sure about distances, Aberdeen to London etc, but when that new battery coms out will give up to 1000 miles or thereabouts per charge, could all be change or so the inventer said.Chris32345 said:
Seems a bit pointless for the mass market
Wireless charging will never be near as efficient as a direct cable
Just like wireless charging in phones how much extra heat does that add?
I can't see it being much use for J Random Punter, but I can see it working for taxis at stations and the like - splash and dash while queueing, without dicking about with cables!Wireless charging will never be near as efficient as a direct cable
