Been contacted by Pod Point for my charger install.

AIUI tethered will reduce faffing with putting the cable away every time but untethered will be more future proof? Or is the type 2 charger (I think thats what the I-Pace uses) here to stay?

Cheers.

Apologies if this has been covered before - search threw up nothing.

Personally I'd go tethered, and I did, for the reasons you specify.

You can buy replacement cables for a tethered unit if you need a different one in the future.

I went untethered and leave the cable connected and padlocked to the wall.

It's as convenient as a tethered charger but means if I want (I don't do long trips in the EV) I can take the cable with me.

I have an Andersen, really happy with it. I have a cable in the car for when I am out and about and it's a real pain to use that, so can't imagine what it would be like to have untethered at home.

Another vote for tethered. Just so convenient.

I quite like the flexibility of this idea, but I suppose if someone really wanted they could quite easily take some bolt cutters or similar to a padlock and wonder off with the £150 cable.

Tethered, always (unless you might switch to a Mk1 leaf in future)

Having to coil up a cable and put it in the boot every time you go out is a faff

Untethered, but it is on the front of the house so I like the discreet look of the EO Mini socket. We charge 2 nights a week-ish and don't find it a problem to disconnect the other end and sling it in the frunk.

Most of our customers, probably 99% have gone untethered but it is personal preference.

I think tethered is more convenient and is ok if you have a charger that stores it all neatly. If not it just looks like a hosepipe wrapped around your charger. The Anderson ones mentioned above for example are a really nice solution but the EO Minis also mentioned above are tiny and you'd have to wrap the cable around it (and probably eventually pull it off the wall) or hang it on a hook next to it, which won't look great, unless it's mostly out of sight.

exactly the same set up i have.

I timed it, takes 23 seconds to open the boot and connect the cable.

I went tethered, but my charge point is in the garage so looks aren't a concern. Separate cable in the boot for charging away from home.

True. In my case they would probably damage the cable whilst doing so but it wouldn't be too difficult.

That said they could also just unscrew the whole charger from the wall. I don't think I saw any that were secure but I didn't exactly look.

I suspect my Landy would be long gone way before the charging cable goes walkies.

Tethered for me. The cable is right there, where I need it.
I don't have to worry about vandalism or theft though, if I did, might make me lean towards untethered but I doubt it.

I would also recommend a tethered unit (but would also recommend using an alternative to pod point unless you have already placed the order with them).

I was in the same position and wanted untethered purely because it looked neater.
In the end I went tethered as its no fun in the freezing cold, p**sing it down with rain in the dark and faffing about dragging a cable out, then having to plug it in twice.

Apologies if this is a dumb question but do you need access to the actual charger unit to use it?

My idea is to fit the charge point on the inside wall at the back of my garage, run the cable up the wall, along the ceiling towards the front a few feet then dangle it down to the car, (E Niro on order), ideally a curly lead that will just hang above the front of the car and then I’ll pull it down to plug in.

When the car is in there’s about 6’ in front where I keep mowers etc. which would limit direct access to the wall at times.

Is this possible?
