Thoughts on this?

If gov't have suggested it.....(tin foil hat mode).....there must be something more planned for it than to offer 'us' the incentives......

More of a PR thing than anything else IMHO. Get's people talking about EV's and may help to drive up adoption, especially when mums start getting number plate envy on the school run.

This 100%. Many EVs aren't obviously EVs, i.e. they look like normal cars.

Yup. I read the BBC article this morning and my initial thought was that it will be a smart thing to do. It plays really nicely to the power of consumerism. There will be consumers who want that different coloured plate. At the same time it helps manufacturers to differentiate their EV products from ICE.

If you take the example of the electric MINI, a risk that it runs is that it won’t be immediately obvious to others that it is electric. The i3 conversely does through its shape but that has been problematic.

Having green plates turning up at the office car park or on the school run will definitely help incentivise others, who can make the change to change sooner. And it also makes regulating the prime parking incentives at shopping destinations easier. Professional consumers will definitely want a green number plate when it allows them to park next to disabled drivers.

Obviously there are the negatives of rewarding virtue signalling but I think they are outweighed.

Plus, those of us with 40 year old cars already get a black and white number plate to visualise our environmental credentials so why shouldn’t people get a different coloured plate for new cars that also pollute less in their own way. biggrin

Or just allow EVs to have the same black and white plates?

I'd rather we were allowed to use the black/silver plates classics have simply because it looks better. Green with clash like crazy.

Not sure about this, white blends in nicely with my white car. Green is a bit garish.

Don’t really care about the number plate colour, just hope they allow us to use bus lanes as suggested.

I suspect that this bit is the sprat to catch the mackerel. As a system it doesn’t actually work because it only takes a small increase in traffic in dedicated lanes to kill their advantage. However, as something to offer people to get something else agreed to it’s very powerful. Once everyone agrees to the less palatable thing that is the primary objective then the sweatener gets dropped out.

I’m puzzled about why anyone might think bus lane access is a significant advantage. I guess if your always in one of a few cities but even then.........?

it would be a big plus in london for about 12 months and the bus lanes would be filled with EVs lol
