I prefer this policy to the interest free loan idea mentioned previously - not without problems though

A Labour government would put a huge fleet of publicly-owned electric hire cars on the streets of Britain in a radical plan for "collective car transport" to help tackle climate change.

Under proposals unveiled today by shadow business secretary Rebecca Long-Bailey, and shared with BuzzFeed News, Labour will commit to spending £300 million on 30,000 “People’s Zipcars” that can be rented in towns, villages, and cities across the country through an app.

The party says its plan will cut carbon emissions, improve air quality, and reduce the number of privately-owned cars on the road.

The policy is a direct challenge to privately-owned car-sharing companies like Zipcar, which by comparison has just 2,600 vehicles available to rent in the UK.

Labour says it will roll out “community car clubs” run by co-operatives and local authorities, focussing on marginalised and “held back” areas.

"Under Labour’s plan, to be announced at its party conference in Brighton today, the government would spend £250 million buying British-made electric cars to support local manufacturing.
The vehicles would be leased to community car clubs up and down the country, bringing in £500 million.
This equates to 30,000 electric cars at £25,000 each."

So they spend £250 million and rent them out for £500 million ? 30,000 x £25,000 = £750 million NOT £250 million

First thing they should buy is a calculator

Mini Electric? Obviously the government wouldn't pay full list price of they're buying a fleet of 30,000 vehicles.

This is the government. They will pay twice* the list price by the time the 42,000 executives, managers and factotums required to administer it are added in.

  • Or X42 or eleventy if Ms Abbott is involved.

I think it's a great idea.
When Rolls, Bentley, JLR, Mini, Lotus, McLaren, Vauxhall etc either close down [Like Rover, LDV, Peugeot did during Brown's 'No more boom and bust' period] or relocate to Poland then Labour can start building cars for the people in the empty factories.
Let's have an electric hybrid with papier mache bodywork and just one trim level. Thousands of cars can be churned out during a 32 hour week. A modern Trabant for the many not the few.
I vote Labour, they seem to have the right idea to make Britain Great Again.

At that size/scale it's a bit bonkers but to be fair there are already community EV schemes along those lines in Wales - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-48011957

Strikes me that £30k list is £25k plus VAT. and also that £300m in 30,000 cars is £10,000 each. Hmm

These fictitious cars won’t last long, look how most hire cars are looked after.

Ah yes the Labour Electric Trabant. Inspired by East Germany as the Marxist Corbyn and McDonnell confiscate schools and private property, tax us the hilt and then get us to drive the State owned electric cars. Of course no sport models as everyone must be treated the same.

And all built in a four day working week rather than five, with no loss of pay!

Perhaps the interpretation is wrong and it’s a net cost of £250m?

Spend £750m, recover £500m, net cost £250m.
