My BiL ia on his usual two weeks with us, and has now been christened by me as Willi pedia, as every bloody subject we mention
he has a story to top or has a knowldge so impresssive, and he rattles stuff off, until i am nearing a comatose state.

During one of these recitations on Telsa cars, ( this started when i showed him the vid of the driver asleep) and he said that he knows of a case ( note NOT Heard, or read) thst one of them crashed due a young geek accessing the on board system and driving it with his joystick.

Mow he has been know to come up with actual facts , but this one seemed so off beat ,it may have a ring of truth. I just didn't query this one..BUT could it happen??

That story rings a bell with me. I'm sure it was the plot in an episode of one of the American dramas that are shown on 5 USA, possibly "Bull"

Google 'Hacking a Tesla' FFS.

Yes, it's possible, then it isn't, then it is, etc, etc, such is the pace of technological development. Techno-leapfrog, if you will.

Not just Tesla though, same applies for any connected asset (cars included) in this IoT world. The more we connect, the more we open up opportunities to access, for good, or for bad,

Tesla’s have been hacked before. It’s just a function of bored kids and software. Probably the most interesting part of the vehicle.

Can someone hack a tesla... Yes, can they take control with a joystick ? Not without developing there own software and mapping that to the Tesla software, seems like alot of effort and usually the type of thing a company does to demonstrate its skills rather than something a hacker would do, there's little value in doing it outside of publicity.
If you did it to steal the cat the whole joystick thing would be alot of programming effort to make the car hard to control, why not programme it to self drive to your secret location instead ?

Note tesla offer a bounty for hacks and have given away cars at white hack conferences to anyone who can hack them

With physical access people have managed to hack the entertainment system and a few other bits but not afik any kind of control and nothing remotely.

The remote bit is a bit of a blag as they had to connect their own wireless device to the car and control through that after compromise.
