Yes and no...
Yes there are a lot of different networks providing charge points all over the country. Each one has a different method of payment, it might be an app, it might require an RFID card, it might accept contactless bank cards, or any combination of those.
Its also worth noting that the government has asked that all new charge points have the option for contactless payments, as that is really easy for the user.
At the end of the day, at this point in time if you're going to do a longer journey in an EV that will require you to charge out in public, then you need to plan in advance and have a Plan B just in case.

On the motorways at the moment there is only ecotricity who have a monopoly (aka ecoatrocity because they don’t work reliably with ccs-equipped cars) or Tesla. Not sure if it is BP or Shell who are putting chargers in at their areas of the motorway services (gets round ecotricity monopoly). I have signed up with Polar who have chargers at lots of sites just off the motorway (eg at quite a lot of Holiday Inn hotels). I think new chargers (maybe from next year) have to provide for contactless payment so no need for network cards but older chargers not covered
