Saw one today in the metal/plastic in a Tesla showroom.
The one thing that struck me was the dash, all modern cars have a binnacle in front of the driver with the instruments but this doesn't. The dash in the Model 3 is completely flat right across with a flat display stuck on the front of it, very similar to an old mini so you are always looking across to see your speed.
Seems overly distracting in my book, apart from that it is just a Model S mini-me.

I was prepared to hate the Model 3 screen, but when I went and had a look, I thought it would be OK. The screen is close enough to the driver that looking at your speed won't really be a chore. It's not ideal, but nor is it offensive.
Of course, it's all designed to keep it cheap. Even good touchscreen displays are cheap as chips compared to lots of switchgear and complicated shapes. Ideally it'd be offered with HUD as well, but I can't see that ever happening.
If the Model Y turns out to be affordable and large enough, the display wouldn't put me off.

It's nothing like an old Mini, the speed reading is in the very top right hand corner of the display on RHD cars so you barely have to move your eyes from the road to see it.
If it bothers you that much you could mount one of these behind the steering wheel?

Surely you've seen the dash on the 3 before? It's been like that since the reveal years ago.The one thing that struck me was the dash, all modern cars have a binnacle in front of the driver with the instruments but this doesn't. Personally I like the 3 dash from a pure design perspective. Modern cars seem to be a random collection of screens and buttons, and at the luxury end they look hideous with wood, chrome, carbon fiber bling all over the place.

Considering how important this car is how come PistonHeads haven’t had a drive/done a review?
Because car 'journalists' are never biased and always impartial, Tesla by not offering paid the industry-standard flights out to Europe with accommodation provided, organised test drives, paid for meals will clearly get the same standard of critique/priority as when the likes of JLR/VAG do a product launch .gottans said:

I can (unfortunately) remember learning to drive in a Renault Modus 10 years ago which had a digital speed dial located in the middle.of the dash. The location of the dial isn't new at all, but implementing it into what is usually the entertainment screen probably is.

If you can sell all you can make maybe you don’t need reviews?

It doesn't pollute enough? There's general hate and scorn for electric cars on here. Also no Porsche badge.

Sticking the screen in the middle is weird indeed, Audi does it well with their virtual cockpit in the TT (no center screen, only one in the steering column binnacle) imho. The one thing that struck me was the dash, all modern cars have a binnacle in front of the driver with the instruments but this doesn't. Still, a mate drives a Tesla 3, very nice car and still that otherworldly experience.
The only this that is REALLY annoying is that you can't shut up all the driver warnings. It alerts you far too often, gets annoying real quick..

No OBD-II port either, so you can't add your own HUD.
For me the main issue is that it's a bit small. Low down, small boot. Bit of a pain to get in and out of.
Oh and the windscreen wipers are really janky. The auto mode doesn't work very well and to manually operate them you have to go through the touch screen menus.

Didn't realise the thing bongs like a banshee, that would royally piss me off. Should only bong if the end of the world is nye.
Every modern car with that number of driver assists suffers with a similar soundtrack in my experience. Currently have a Renault Kajdar hire car for a couple of weeks and it's constantly making annoying noises without any real explanation as to why..Gassing Station | EV and Alternative Fuels | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
