So, I have newly graduated daughter home again for an indefinite period of time and she's going to want a car to pootle about in. Doesn't need to be long range and we might not keep it that long. I fancy an EV so what do we think is the cheapest way into an EV at present? Don't mind it being few years old or having a somewhat reduced range.
I fancied that Evezy deal, it sounded ideal, but they insure the cars as well and don't take on drivers under 25 unfortunately. Leafs (Leaves?) and Zoes have been around a while now, but the battery rental thing is confusing.

A Zoe will be ideal for young drivers.

A 2016 22kWh ZOE will be about £7k and £45/month in battery rental. They’ve actually gone up in price in the last year. I don’t think there’s much degradation in their batteries as they’re actually more than 22kWh and the management software does pretty well.

If you get one from before the warranty change (2018 iirc) it has a 4 year warranty which you can extend indefinitely.

There’s also battery owned versions, you’ll be paying out £10-11k probably, but obviously no battery rental.

They are as a novelty, however that novelty will soon wear thin.

I'd go ZOE with battery rental (unlikely to find one with owned battery), they can be picked up plenty cheap enough and I reckon after a year you'll probably sell it for not much less than you paid for it.

Mitsubishi iMiev / Peugeot Ion / Citroen C-Zero can be had for about £5k, battery owned. Just filter Autotrader on fuel type = electric and there'll be some on the first page or two.

It's a "real" car in ways the Twizy and G-Whiz aren't - small but fine as a runabout, 50-60 mile range and they have a CHAdeMO socket (like a Leaf) for rapid charging if you need to go further.

We test drove the Smart FourFour EV, but went for the Zoe instead, better in every way!

Certainly the Zoe is the most affordable EV currently available with a decent range.

Evezy is the cheapest Zoe, I think it's £289 a month.

I reckon it won't be long before all the early Japanese Leafs are in New Zealand, some car yards are full of them.

Prices start at 5,000 pounds.

The only thing that matters with a Leaf is the battery capacity, the lower it is... the less the range.

Have three Leafs, cheapest was 3,500 pounds, seven bars left out of twelve. Fine for round town. Around 50 mile range (with care)

How far had the 7 bar Leaf gone? I've still got 10 at 70K.
