Anyone else underwhelmed with the forthcoming new EVO?
Discussion
Talk is that with the help of electric power it might reach 320 bhp. Whoopy doo! I recently sold an Evo totally standard from 2004 with over 400 bhp. The Evo 8 range it came from included a gutsy 340 bhp version as well. The later 9 had a stonking 366 bhp car which in some ways was better than the earlier 400 as it had more torque from lower down the rev range.
The new one is apparently using a dated Renault engine too! I can't see anyone but die hard Mitsu fans choosing to pay a reported £40,000 when many current hot hatches will blow that thing out of the water.
A modern Evo should have a modern motor, maybe they could buy some Fords RS engines and tweak them for 400 bhp. Then people might pay £40,000.

Exactly. BPH isn't a good comparison for ICE vs. electric, because the torque profiles are so different. Even an old Leaf with about 120 bph on paper can embarrass many BMWs and Audis at the lights.
In fact it's one of the best things about EVs - some idiot in his fossil pulls up, floors it as soon as the light goes green and you sail past them in quiet comfort as their engine grinds and strains to get moving. The look on their face, seen in your rear-view mirror, is often quite hilarious.

Many, years ago (mid '70s) I had access to a Daf 33 - 750cc, variomatic drive (rubber bands) and a centrifugal clutch. At red light left foot on brake, right foot keeping the revs at the point where the clutch was starting to bite. When light turned green took left foot off brake and floored the throttle. The little car beat everything off the mark, unfortunately the lead didn't last long though. In fact it's one of the best things about EVs - some idiot in his fossil pulls up, floors it as soon as the light goes green and you sail past them in quiet comfort as their engine grinds and strains to get moving.
