Anybody ever installed their own?

Say for example you live several floors up in a block of flats and there is only public street parking, is there any way around this? I've seen people with massive leads hanging out of living room windows but this seems a bit primitive and insecure.

I believe you can apply to the council to have one installed. Of course that wont stop someone else with an EV/hybrid car parking there so you can't use it and you'd have to pay the usual fees for a public charging point.

I asked exactly this question of Tower Hamlets Council when I was considering getting an i3 a year or so ago. I live in a terrace with on-road parking, with a pavement between my front gate and the road on which cars park (i.e. the traditional arrangement).

They replied to say that any form of installation was impossible and they reminded me that it was illegal to run a cable across the pavement should I wish to charge my car from a socket in my own house.

As I understand it, each council has an annual budget for installing public charging points on residential streets. I suspect their reply to you actually meant "we haven't got any money left". smile

It may well have done. However councils ALWAYS have money to do things they want to do so I think the true meaning was probably "We'd rather not." smile

There is funding available from central government to install on-street charging, they just have to take it up.

They are going to have to eventually, but as usual will drag their feet as much as possible.

This lamppost charger looks good for those with no access to off road parking
Just need to pressure local councils to get them installed
