First EV Experience
Discussion
So at the weekend I got to spend some time driving an I Pace. It was my first time in an electric vehicle since hanging on to the back of a milk float when I was a kid!
I have to say I was seriously impressed, the car was a great place to be as JLR do seem to have some nice interiors & finishes and the performance was pretty incredible. Within minutes it felt completely normal (I'm not sure what I was expecting!) apart from the blistering acceleration!
It was a high spec one so I think it's the thick end of £80k so a bit out of my price range but if this is anything to go by I definitely think the futures electric as much as I love my supercharged Range Rover I cant wait for the powertrain to come across to Range Rovers (and the second hand value come down to something I can afford!)
We have a VW Transporter van too and I've just read the electric version of that is due out at the end of the year. It could be a really possibility for us as we do a good 20k per year in that. Anyone got any inside info on what the prices are likely to be?

Good to hear you liked your test-drive.
I signed up to the "cheap" i-pace lease deal last Autumn - the car arrived earlier this month. I've been very impressed - it is an accomplished car.
As to the price, they are starting to appear on Autotrader advertised at circa £57k for a base spec S model with 1300 miles (which by the way, could well have most of the kit you might want). In a few months, I suspect they will be closer to £50k.
So still a lot of money, but maybe worth bearing in mind.

I had an i3 for three years December 2015 to December 2018. Wanted another EV but (long story) not a fan of Tesla. So last November the only one I am interested in is the iPace - Audi and Merc equivalents look dull, dull, dull and I did jaguar performance event at oulton park which made th iPace the only car I was interested in. Arriving in about 4-5 weeks time

80 large is jaw dropping money to spend on an EV to me.....
Christ, Id buy a 3k Prius and some Pork for that......
£80k is alot to spend on any car, but if your going to spend that much wouldn't you rather get something that is future instead of the past??Christ, Id buy a 3k Prius and some Pork for that......
I would also say if you think something like an iPace can be compared to a 1st gen Prius you clearly haven't driven any EV, let alone a really good one.

Ignoring the fact that the amount may be the equivalent of £30 to the purchaser, does that just not seem "wrong" ?
This is a petrolhead website after all ......
Not trolling or trying to provoke, I just cant get my head round that number.

Your find most of us on here who own EVs have and often still do own some nice combustion cars. Not trolling or trying to provoke, I just cant get my head round that number.
Prior to Tesla most EVs were horrible tiny things for tree huggers, like the G-Wiz. Its no wonder no one took EVs seriously. Your milk float comparison is pretty accurate.
BUT the range of good EVs more available is more than ever and a world away from the horrible small/pointless EVs from the past.
The iPace is probably the best car Jaguar makes today, and Porsche is calling their up and coming EV the most important car in their recent history, infact for Porsche's 75th anniversary event last year, it wasn't a 911 that made the press material but an yet to be released EV!!!
By all means question why bother with EVs, but take one for a test drive and your soon realise what the fuss is about......Change is good, change is exciting, but change is often expensive - especially at the start .

The joy of driving is hearing the revs and induction rise and feeling the grip.......surely ?

Can I ask why you have zero interest in EV's? Not trolling either, just interested.
I have to say if you told me 5 years ago I would be driving an 2.5ton electric SUV I would have told you to go and see a psychiatrist.Am sure you had the same questions/uncertainty when first been told about EVs?
Despite all the EV news around alot of people still relate EVs to a G-Whizz, but I've only come across only a handful of people whom have tried any modern EV and come away still feeling underwhelmed.
Things are changing but its still slow, we like to argue about different EV brands on here, but the reality is most people still don't know enough about EVs. Getting people to forget about the horrid G-Whiz is one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption.

All I can say is go and try one.....The joy of driving is hearing the revs and induction rise and feeling the grip.......surely ?
I've had a DC2 Teg, 350Z, 335i, nope none of those cars interest me any more. Others on here have exotica like Astons partnering their EVs, and am sure if you ask they will give their views.
Again all I say is go and test drive one, any of them and your get 'It', just like I did, and the OP .

Never driven the Celica or it’s bigger brother the Supra but always liked the look of them.
Until you driven an EV, and I suggest the Tesla Model S or Model 3 (when it eventually gets here) please don’t dismiss them before you hang up your driving boots. I’ll grant you no revs, noise, or gear changes but the acceleration, torque, and one pedal control of the deceleration phase adds up to a helluva experience.

Then my wife suggested a shopping trip to Westfield, which would normally mean I come over all poorly and can’t leave the house. Instead I went and had a test drive of the Model S. I was very happily doomed from the first launch.
I’m of the opinion that as more EVs become mainstream the government will bring in regulations to electronically limit acceleration. They currently accelerate faster than some drivers’ brains can keep up with and they may not take in all the hazards in the first 100 metres. One day soon, an elderly driver will mistake the accelerator for the brake, as they do, and mow down many more people than he or she would have done in a conventional ICE automatic.
