i got sucked into Lithium battery vs solid state batteries today after reading about toyota's luke warm approach to a full EV line up.

SS looks to offer far better range but the cost seems monster prohibitive for the moment.

on the basis all the current crop of ev's top out at @ 280-310 miles max, how long before SS comes into play do you think - ie are we years and years away?

My gut feeling is that it's similar to OLED display technology ten years ago;
very promising but impossible to manufacture cost effectively, so hopefully
it will become commercially viable within the next 5 years or so?

Read up about the company Dyson bought. As far as I'm aware they wrote off the failed investment. Expect EV batteries similar to current ones (no pun intended) for the next few years.

Tesla kind of have the right idea, the current tech has been proven to work and the worries about batteries not lasting long has been shown to be false.

So we just need to get the price down, and looking at the Model3 and their recent price reductions it seems they have managed to do so.

Chances are solid state might appear in things like phones first but be very expensive, then the process slowly starts again to get the costs down, but we definitely should not wait for it, lithium ion is great for now and gets better every year.

We're going to see cars with 400-600 miles ranges next year probably close to £30k while the 200-300 ranges cars will drop closer to £20k.

Then you might see solid state in hyper cars.

Really exciting times, can't wait for the city centre to be free of diesel fumes!
