So.. getting ready for my BMW 530e delivery and want to install a home charger.

Going to future proof to a 7KW.

Untethered.

Podpoint is £359.

Charged EV £250.

What is the difference between the two of them?

As far as I can see the Podpoint is wifi enabled and Charged EV isn't.

Is that much of an advantage - don't know which to get - can you guys offer your experienced views?

I would go for the cheapest 7kW tethered option - do check the cable length.

The "cleverness" is mostly car-side, not chargepoint, which is nothing more than a heavy-duty separate 240v supply, relay, cable and plug-end.

Do you think you’re going to get an EV going forward sometime in the future at that property?

Will you be fussed about potential variable rate tariffs & smart meter coupled with a smart charger?

If no, go with the normal Rolec. Both will supply the same amount of power.

If you’re interested in more smart metering/monitoring/home stuff I’d look at a smart charger including one like the Zappa and look at tariffs such as Octopus Plunge pricing https://octopus.energy/agile/

There’s a referral code if you want - get £50 for you credit with them. Already looked at some stuff and overnight it goes to 2-9pkWh. Not much for the 530e but will be if you go to a full EV sometime.

Also have you got a type 2 lead with the car? Generally they don’t come with them and it’ll be an extra £90-100.

I went with a tethered install, just easier than faffing about in the dark / rain getting your cable

Think I read that they are stopping the grant for the 'dumb' ones in July - has to be 'smart'....

Thank you - starting to get the impression that 'smart' is the way forward - future proofing etc However, certainly don't want to go down the subscription route that some chargers seem to have.

Ah yes I’d tell subscription based services to beggar off smile

330e driver here, until next Tuesday when my i3 turns up.

Really would recommend a tethered charger over the untethered - otherwise that cable is just going to take up boot space / need taking in/out of the garage all the time.

Then if you find yourself going for public AC charging (only really worthwhile if it’s free and you’re going to be there for 1-1.5 hours) buy a cable - plenty 2nd hand on eBay. I sold my old 16A cable for £30 at work - the 330e/530e can’t charge faster than 3.6kW

Rapid chargers use to be worth using when they bill by the kWh but most have moved to a fixed fee for 60
Minutes and you’ll find it’s not worth the cost.

Enjoy smile they’ve got a lovely smooth drive in slow paced traffic with the EV and the gearbox.

No it doesn't come with the type 2 - just the granny I think.

£90/100 and the rest - cheapest I have found is £120 region on eBay.

Obviously I can see the advantages of tethered - however, the way I see it, is with untethered at least you can take it with you when you might think you might need it elsewhere - saves the cost of another cable. When you know you don't need it ...leave it plugged in - virtually the same as tethered. Surely these things are weatherproof.

As I said in my other post - can't you just leave it plugged in?
Surely more future proof to be untethered - future car might need different cable etc - look at how many times Apple products kinchange (just had to buy another bloody dongle this morning!)

Haven't seen them that cheap - will have a closer look! Good advisory about the public chargers - wasn't aware of that.

Thank you - looking forward to it. Enjoy your i3!

It doesn’t lock to the charger generally. You probably need to pay extra for a locking solution on an untethered charger

Edit : it’ll only be locked in place when attached to a vehicle which is charging. Otherwise the locking pin is generally released. A guy at work bought an untethered then wanted to leave it connected at home but was worried of someone just nicking the cable, I believe Chargedev do a locking solution for their Rolec

I got chargedEV, mate got Podpoint.

I had three cancelled appointments before mine got installed, his was done within a week. By reputation, podpoint don't seem to bother with charging extra for anything extra needed, chargedEV will if anything is not within the parameters of a "simple" install. Both will ask for pictures and distances etc to check before booking.

He also managed to damage his connector (tripped over the lead) and called podpoint expecting to pay for a new one. But they just came along and fixed it for free.

Podpoint don't charge more for a tethered version. I went untethered just to keep options open, and just in case we have a visitor that needs to charge and they use a Type 1 - if they have their own cable with them then they can charge. But that's still not happened and I think it's very likely our next car will use type 2 anyway so I'd go tethered if I was buying again. There's a socket in the garage that a visitor with a type 1 car could use with a granny charger anyway.

Type 1 cars are the older Leaf, Kia Soul, Outlander, Ampera, i-Miev. Everything else is Type 2 and pretty much everything new is Type 2.

I'd be going Podpoint (and tethered) if I was doing it all again.

FWIW I had a tethered Type 2 charging point installed by ChargedEV a few weeks ago and everything went smoothly from start to finish - I also got £50 off with code OVO50 which widened the gap to PodPoint and tipped it in ChargedEV's favour - can't fault it to date and wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

They are, that's exactly how we use ours. It's been quite a bonus as we'll probably be going from one type of cable to another with our next car, so has saved major faffage.
