Now that Mercedes has unveiled an all-electric SUV that it plans to start producing next year, what does this mean for Tesla? Not forgetting that Jaguar Land Rover offers the I-Pace electric SUV, Volkswagen has the luxury arm while Audi is due later this month to unveil its e-tron in San Francisco. Tesla tried to convince us that the future is EV, but it would seem they are losing out in a game that they were supposed to be miles ahead by now.
Goldman analysts are already predicting Tesla's stock falling to $210 in six months. Can Tesla handle their own or will this big name players just add to their woes?

Its just more choice, the EV market is miniscule compared to the ICE market and has space to grow massively enabling all of them to have a decent piece of the pie, both Nissan and Renault are ahead of the premium players in regards EV's and tech .... non story really, although I can see Tesla becoming the thinking mans EV the same was Saabs were perceived and all the sheeples will flock toward the german badges ...

These long standing manufacturers will be knocking out great, reliable , well screwed together cars.

But they are only useful if you never drive 120 miles away from home.

What Tesla have is rapid charging infrastructure, which takes years to roll out.

Personally i'm not that impressed by the EQC. 2400kg and a potential range of up to 280 miles, but it's not out for another 18 months. Meanwhile Jaguar are starting to get the I-Pace out on the road now, and Hyundai and Kia are both releasing vehicles now with similar range.
I think the EQC will be off the pace when it finally gets released.

Where will Tesla be in 6 months?

Well the EQC isnt in customer hands for 18+ months
e-tron not until mid next year
iPace they cant make many of, maximum 20k a year if they are lucky.
VW plant they are only just starting to work on will do 100,000 by 2020 as planned (lets see if there are delays).

Tesla make 100k model s and x a year let alone 3's , they are on target to hit $100 per KWH battery costs when Germany is scratching round for any old batteries. Tesla are at least 6 more like 8 years ahead on EV's , the iPace/etron/EQC barely catching the 7 year old teslas platform. Yes they might get the interior fit and finish etc better but on the drivetrain/battery front they are behind by a long time.

Now by 2022/23 it might be a different story . But tesla in 6 months? if they have any problems by then it wont be caused by the competition.

SAABs weren’t ludicrously expensive and went out of business because they weren’t selling any cars.

Tesla could well be the new SAAB in that respect.

Sheeples. Oh dear.

shoot

I’m very much looking forward to the new Alpine. Is that German?

I cannot see Tesla being worried about the competition from jaguar, Mercedes and Audi et al for some time yet - it will be some years before there is volume competition. However, I really don’t know if Tesla are selling all the model S they are making - aren’t they stashing a load of unsold ones? If that’s the case then they might be having some difficulties already. For me the model s has gone up so much in price it feels too expensive

Without the supercharger network ....... still even Jaguar has a long way to go . After 18 months of Tesla ownership only 1 range anxiety ( unfounded ) moment .
This is a key nothing else really matters .
In 5 years yes EV will be less than 15 K from Korea and China and like phones all will have them , ICE will be banned from Cities .... and new problems for the generators will begin ...

All will have them in 5 years? Not a chance.

The average age of cars on the road in the UK is about 8 years. In the USA 12.

In 5 years there’ll still be millions, the significant majority, of ICE cars on the road.

5 years is crazy talk.

Look at vw biggest car maker on the planet.

Their plans is to have 100,000 ev production in 2020, 5 years is 2023 they make 8 or 9 million a year..

It means that after all that effort Mercedes aren't even able to match the performance/range of Teslas sold today, let alone the ones that may be available when it launches.

Teslas also have a decent charging network.

take off the Tesla glasses and you will find many more charging points, having said this many more will be needed and it won’t all be from Tesla.

When looking at mileage most drivers do not do 300 miles a day it’s more like 30-60 miles per day. So range on most of these EV’s is not an issue

Sure there are many more charging points, the best of them less than half the power of Tesla’s, and horribly unreliable.
Yes, most cars don’t do more than 60 miles per day, but most do long journeys, visiting relatives, holidays, Xmas etc etc. Unless there is another family size ICE available those long journeys could be very tiresome indeed.

There are improvements being made to the public charging network but IMO it’ll take 5 years before long journey range anxiety will be a thing of the past.

As far as what does it mean for Tesla, not a lot frankly. If anything it’ll just increase the take up of EV’s which is a good thing anyway.

For most public charging will be like a spare tyre.

You really don't want to leave home without it but you'll almost never use it.

It's quite possible to own an ev and never use public charging.
