Tesla model 3 - realistic times for availability in UK
Discussion
Anyone ' in the know ' that can give me a rough idea as to when the model 3 will be available to the mainstream in the UK ?
doesn't seem to be much info out there other than '2019' but that isn't uk specific...
when you get out from the PHEVs, and the leaf's all you're really left with is the i3 and we already have one of those, fancy a change for the 2nd car and the model S&X are a little too rich for me..

Looked into importing a Chevvy Volt or Bolt? Hyundai Kona EV? Ioniq EV? Kia Soul EV?
Thought it was still 18 months for a Model 3 if you put your money down now.
Going to FoS tomorrow and there's one there so going to be having a good old gawp at it!
Am in the same situation as you, my 330e goes back shortly, just had 3 days in a leaf and 3 days in an i3. Tried a Volvo XC60 T8 phev, the 530e and the Merc C350e too. I think I'll be going for a 2 year stint in an i3 with a view of then getting a Model 3.

Was looking for something at least half 'premium' - how did you find the 330e ?Thought it was still 18 months for a Model 3 if you put your money down now.

Saw this on speakev, apparently from the UK Telsa owners' group:
"The first static display M3's are arriving in August and you'll be invited to come check it out at your nearest store. We'll also receive the first test drive cars in December and the configurator and price will be out then too. Mid 2019 for the first pre-orders and any new one would be delivered in the second half of 2019."
I'm guessing that will just be for the more expensive long-range battery / premium version. If you're expecting to buy one for less than £40k (standard battery / interior - the "mainstream" one) then quite some time after that.
Kona orders will open soon, deliveries from Sept/Oct apparently.

Interestingly stateside no longer need reservations to order one now.
This is more to do with Tesla wanting people willing to spend $70K to order the Performance version over people with a reservation waiting for the $35K version. Tesla has now/about to break the 200K EVs sold mark in the US, this means the $7.5K federal tax credit buyers can claim will be phased out for Tesla cars over the next 18 months. By opening up the order books for everyone it means someone who hasn't reserved a 3 can now order the top spec $70K version and get the car built/delivered and benefit from the full $7.5K federal credit and jump ahead of someone with a day one reservation waiting for the $35K version to appear.
That might not seem 'fair' but for Tesla the profit margin on the $70K version will be huge compared to the $35K car, so Tesla will do every thing possible to 'encourage' buyers who can afford the most expensive version to order now rather than wait for stay 6-12 months.
Currently even if you order the $70K Performance version the waiting time is still 6 months+ I believe. US customers waiting for the $35K version wouldn't be getting their cars till 2019 at the earliest.

Some interesting info coming from US Tesla Model 3 buyers. If you want the current RWD car with premium interior than the wait is now 3 months tops - That's for a $50K car (before tax credit), whilst the AWD/Performance version $70K is still showing October+ time.
The only conclusion I can draw is the current Model 3 buyers are people who can afford a $50k+ car with not much issue, hence most are choosing to upgrade from RWD to AWD ($4K option 8% list price difference) for quicker 0-60 time. The vast majority of 400K+ pre-orders are waiting for the $35K version where.....Will be interesting to see how quickly Tesla get the base car out.

The article literally says they haven't.The car in europe is a US spec car, there's a fir bit of type approval issues to overcome for the EU market, even boring stuff like certain warning lights in fixed positions (I don't pretend to know but I read an article by a guy who certainly appeared to know the challenges and a fair few are with the controls and displays).
Doing the man maths, if they've 400k+ reservations and they're peaking at 5k a week and probably about 4k on average, thats 2 years production to fulfill the reservations, so perfectly possible in a year they'll be having cars in Europe. If many of the reservations (say half) are waiting for the $35k model that needs to be profitable sooner than later otherwise in a year they either make cars at a loss or they need a lot of new orders flooding in for an expensive car when they're pushing them out at the rate they are.

Aha. Managed to find some info directly from someone at Tesla!
They are saying those with reservations get cars in 2nd half of 2019. Those in the UK placing a new order, delivery will probably be 2020.

I'd say a lot more than half are waiting for the cheaper one. As said above, they've already opened up Model 3 orders to non-reservation holders in the US and Canada for those willing to buy an expensive one. The (rather detailed) bloomberg estimator reckons they're just below 50k Model 3s made so far. That must be a vast number of people who got their "order now" email and opted to defer until later, if they're keen to keep the high-margin orders flowing.Doing the man maths, if they've 400k+ reservations and they're peaking at 5k a week and probably about 4k on average, thats 2 years production to fulfill the reservations, so perfectly possible in a year they'll be having cars in Europe. Whats a little odd is I think the cheapest current M3 is 49k, but I think you can still get a 7k grant before its stopped making it 42k, if you wait for the 35k model the grant will have shrunk/gone and you may be paying 35k if they can actually get it down that low... I'd take the better car for only 7k moreGassing Station | EV and Alternative Fuels | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
