Last night she had some news item come up on her phone...

I think she's referring to all fossil fuelled cars ceasing production in 2040 and only electric from there on, but...

...it got me thinking that as autonomous cars become more widespread, humans piloting cars will become a nuisance on the roads as they won't be controlled by the centralised computer which is bound to come sooner or later. If all cars were autonomous they could speak to each other, travel up a motorway a meter apart, never collide, etc.

So... when WILL driving a car, EV or other, be banned in favour of autonomous vehicles?

Well, of course this is a stupid question as very soon there will be more and more new autonomous vehicles on our roads followed by more and more deaths caused by such. Last year I had my near death experience at "the hands" of my wife's 2016 BMW X1 when it took over from me whilst driving. It's a scary thing not to be in control, especially when you haven't been told that your car has this capability!

Not answering your question (I may come back after I have thought it for a while) but fossil fuellled cars will not cease production in 2040. Solely fossil fuelled cars will cease production whilst fossil fuelled/ electric hybrids will continue.
