Hi everyone.

Have been thinking about what to get next after my Tesla 70D that I haven't got on with all that well. Been toying with various Hybrids etc but I am starting to come to the conclusion that perhaps I should upgrade to a S100D to hopefully solve most of my issues with my 70D i.e long distance journeys and use the money I save on fuel, tax etc to save up for what I really want which is a Evora S as a third car. Just accept the Tesla is a good comfy and cheap to run daily.

My main concern though is that I spend 90-100 thousand on another Tesla to run into the same issues. So my main question to any of you who have S100Ds is how far does it really go? For instance early Monday morning temp 3c raining meeting in Manchester from my house in Norwich 229 miles to travel at 80 mph in theory assuming a real world range of say 290 miles should get there easy. But would I?

I guess what I really want to know is what is the worst you will get?

Don't think I have ever seen anyone call a potential 100D 'cheap' smile.

If your saving for an another car and doing long trips why not just get a diesel?

Back in 2010ish me and my wife had daily 100 mile+ commutes for about 4 years. We got a pre-reg loaded Honda Civic for £13k. Put about 90K on it in a short time, I than sold it for £5k with no issues.

We claimed back most of the fuel costs, so only cost to us was deprecation, which worked out at just under 9p per mile. The car would have been good for another 90K with no issues - no dpf on older Civics.

If saving money is the main aim get a used reliable diesel and your save alot more than getting a 100D Tesla.

Always difficult to compare real world usage with others as driving styles and conditions differ so much. As a rough guide how about comparing what you get now based on the usable battery capacity between the model you have now and the 100D?

The original 70 has 68.8kWh and the software limited 70 has 65.9kWh. The 100D has 98.4kWh usable. The 100D will be heaver and is quicker than the 70 both which might impact range a little, but if you use your real world range and increase it by e.g. a third you won’t be far out I don’t think.

Another option would be to get Tesla to loan one to you, many of the loan stock are 100D’s but you may need to book ahead as the loan stock are heavily subscribed! You wouldn’t be able to achieve the low temperatures you mention but comparing to what you are used to should help.

Interesting article in the 100D here:

It’s cheap as a company car compared to the other options like an M5 or Range Rover etc.

That’s not a bad idea comparing what I get now and trying to apply the math to the larger battery.

Before ordering anything I intend to ask to borrow one for a day or a night so I can pick up from WD drive home to Norfolk and back again. In my mind it will be a simple pass fail excersize it should do it with no charging or one very short stop. If it can’t do that journey significantly better than my current one I won’t put up with it.

An electric car will go further in warmer weather - using a heater will reduce range.

However, by far the biggest influence on range is simply how fast you go. Up and down hills largely cancel each other out, leaving speed as the determining factor.

When you think about it an EV pushes air out of the way (ignoring small rolling losses), and the power needed increases by the square (?) of the speed.

Hence, real world range depends on the driver.

I can have a 50% bigger range in my eNV200 when driving in a city compared with the open road.

As well as the comparison between batteries and pro rats the range, the latest cars have a newer motor which is slightly more efficient. 220 miles in poor conditions could well be getting close to the limit.

You’re more likely to get a response if you went on one of the uk Tesla Facebook groups.

To join the closed Facebook Group you need to be an owner or have one on order (not a Model 3 reservation) https://www.facebook.com/groups/teslaownersuk/

Before I bought mine and found out about the FB group I found the SpeakEV group very useful, and it still is.

Also the TMC forum is very good and the US forum is extensive.
