OK, curiosity is getting the better of me.

Does anyone know of reliable ways around/beyond Renault's battery leasing nonsense?

I'm intrigued by the Twizy. And if it wasn't for the battery leasing thing I'd probably buy one tomorrow (at the 3-4k mark). But the battery leasing aspect doesn't sit well with me.

I've done plenty of Googling but all paths lead to one or two dead ends.

I'm hearing Renault may bin the battery lease thing later this year.

So does anyone have direct experience? And are there any owners on here?

There is no way around it; I asked our RCi area rep, recently about the thousands of batteries out there on a lease and if any slip the net, he said none do as there is a dedicated team keeping an eye on things and they do chase up if there is any battery that isn't currently leased.

As for the rumour regarding early cars having the battery lease done away with and the batteries being gifted, as far as I'm aware this was only to do with ZOE and original customers who still had their cars as a kind of thank you for being early adopters and anyway it was only a passing comment which was made a few years ago, which has never been repeated.

As far as I'm aware, battery leasing is here to stay, with ZOE and all commercials there is the choice of ownership or battery or lease, as for Twizy I don't really think RUK give a toss what happens, Twizy is for sale in the UK, I shouldn't think a French or German Twizy is any different to a UK one, if one is sold in the UK then great if one isn't then the no great shakes; dealers aren't targeted on them and neither do they count or pay towards any targets if a dealer happens to sell one.

Thanks.

I've seen a few advertised as owning their batteries but thought it didn't look right. Presumably RCI chase the current/previous owners to get them back on lease? At service or MOT?

Shame as that models a no go for me. And looks like it's not doing used values any favours at all.

Not sure about the Twizy, but on the Zoe at time of purchase (when new) you could chose to buy outright or lease the battery. I think it was in the region of £10k more if you wanted to own the battery outright, which meant it wasn't a popular option.

Return the battery to Renault and fit a motorbike engine in the Twizy. idea
Bizarrely that would defeat the object for me.

There are a few Twizy owners who have handed the battery back and made their own I haven't researched enough if they have now turned this into a business selling these batteries but a few have done it.

Really?

I've always been under the impression that the battery and chassis are tied together (they are on our renault systems, you check a VIN and it gives you the BIN) but I've not heard of anyone returning a battery to Renault!

+1

That'll be an interesting thing to ask our RCI rep when I next see him.

I'm sure your rep will tell you it's not possible if everyone did it they wouldn't have a business.
