I don't think I've ever seen this from any other manufacturer, via a software update Tesla have lobbed a massive 1second+ off the 0-60 time of the base cars!!

Pretty sure plenty more performance is in these cars just waiting for modders to crack the software.

Not quite. That website says:

"New meaning that the current lineup won’t get an over-the-air update to unlock the new specs – as the upgrade consists of both software and hardware tweaks, so only those who buy a new vehicle today will enjoy the increased performance."

I want one more now - wonder if they'll drop the price of inventory models, or upgrade the hardware?

After watching the Formula E porgramme on Sky sports .... this really is the future and the kids are simply not interested in ICE anymore ....... slow and dated

Still not convinced this will be that exciting after the initial shock factor of the acceleration. Bit like Formula E, seemed to be the most dull thing imaginable to me, couldn't watch it for much more than a few moments.

Whilst I respect what tesla are achieving, it doesn't really excited me that much. No invigorating sounds or smells, just point and squirt at its finest/worst.

Its a bit odd that they've done this without a change in model name. They did this 2 years ago with the 85D and it was software, and when they did it with the P85 before then, it wasnt backwards and it was called the P85+

There are three schools of thought as to what they're doing -

- Putting the 100kwh battery in all cars and limiting it down to 75 as that will give the extra voltage required to get close to the 100D performance

- Putting the ludicrous fuse on all batteries, this will give a higher peak current, but you'd imagine they could get a bit more out the 100D, maybe they've chosen to limit it

- Its always been there and it is software.

Whichever it is, they need to drive new sales as they starting to plateau, maybe even fall (evidence of which is Tesla are still making 20-25k cars a quarter, they've gone into new markets so those cars are spread more thinly in each country, yet they now have a lot of inventory stock they didn't have before). One thought is because people are waiting for Model 3 details and they want/need to put more clear water between the cars.

My guess is that they have a bit more data on real world reliability and so just decided to increase the fuse size for newly made cars, and then just adjusted the software to use the additional available current.

No reason as far as I can see to think they are installing the 100kwh battery FOC.

As reported in electrek today, the new cars have a different drive unit (new part #).

I'm surprised they can just do this, I would have thought it would require the car to re-assessed for insurance groups or something, or at least DVLA to be told.

I wonder how these sorts of software updates will affect insurance. Do you have to ring your insurer and tell them your car has been modded? smile

I believe there are 2 types of rear motor currently across the range. Those in the 75 and those in the 90 and 100. 75 is changing, increasing acceleration noticeably, 90 and 100 increasing marginally.

Up until now there were two rear motors, one in the P cars and a different one in the non P cars. They're changing the motor unit but it's still unclear exactly where the performance is coming from as the 75 couldn't previously deliver as much instantaneous power as the larger batteries.

Just had a update from Tesla:

'To simplify choices further with Model S and Model X we have introduced some new standard features. These include Smart Air Suspension with GPS memory for automatically raising and lowering ride height, Interior Ambient Lighting and LED Fog and Cornering Lights for greater visibility at night. We have also introduced the High Amperage Charging Upgrade as a standard option on both Model S and Model X which will give you charging speeds up to 51 miles per hour on 3phase AC charge points.'

My mate is getting one on the 20th August (X) and I am sure the Tesla demonstrator chap said the GPS ride stuff was included back in June.

I wouldn't exactly call 51mph "charging".

About 150mph is nearer the mark.

I followed a black Model X off the M42 this morning in my Mercedes GL. I drive fast and even though the GL is hefty, it has 265bhp to help it overcome the lardiness.

But - no surprise on paper - the X left me for dead. What a stupendously hilarious experience. It even cornered totally flat.

I've spent the morning perusing the 10 Model X ads on Autotrader. I'm not yet ready to throw £70K on a car but I sincerely wish I could (to go alongside a G55 I can't afford either).

Model X is OK cornering for an SUV of its weight but they do not really lend themselves to enthusiastic driving. Rolling acceleration is amazing and the low centre of gravity and grip mean you can push hard and exit fast but you don't look at stretch of winding road and think "here we go" the way you would in some cars.
