New Lithium batteries with 3 times the storage

The lithium-ion battery has been given THREE times the storage by a 96 yr old man, Dr John Goodenough. THREE times the storage of the current Li-ion batteries, smaller, a 5 minute charge time, is non-flammable, lighter, with NO degradation after several thousand charging cycles. And, it's ready for production, and should be cheaper to produce. Smart phones will last 4 days not one day. If it goes to market in volume and the price drops as a result, this is `game changer`. Full EVs are then here and bye, bye polluting petro fuels. It is also the other applications that add much value overall. I can see them in battery trains to save on the excessive cost of overhead wires and planes. with a generator on board.
As a retrofit a battery set change will triple the range of a plug-in Prius. It will also capture more kinetic energy as well. The car is transformed by as simple battery change.

It's pretty bloody close already. A Tesla supercharger is apparently capable of 145kW between a pair of outlets - they apparently run at 480v, so that's 300A - or 120kW per car - 250A. These are likely to be US figures.The single phase transformer (installed three years ago!) that serves our house and eight others is fused at 200A, rated at 300A.

i know I shouldn't rise to this but it did pique my curiosity and it seems to be an urban myth - Not even good for that:0-30: 3.4 seconds (car and driver)
0-60: 10.2 seconds (car and driver)
Fiesta ST - 2.2 seconds (several thousand £ cheaper)
Standard Mustang GT - 1.9 seconds (several thousand glances more attractive but far less depreciation)
Of course, electric car pub bores will never accept that...they know how to torque. and, funnily enough, 0-30 is a really hard figure to find, I tried googling a Focus Ecoboost but that figure can't be found so it's easy to big up on electric cars. So ends my conspiracy theory.

They are simply people seeking funding publicised by green nutjobs/ideologues with an agenda to make you believe a new energy paradigm is possible - it isn't.
There are millions of interesting lab scale batteries and effects, they never see the light of day.
If you read the article you'd have noticed all the usual red-flag caveats you always get in suck 'miracle' battery development articles.

Come on, talk about apples and oranges. The Focus Ecoboost would be a good comparison, a Fiesta ST is not.0-30: 3.4 seconds (car and driver)

There are loads of video's on Youtube showing EV's beating sports cars from 0 - 30 mph, which for urban driving is where you want the advantage to be.

As for comparisons, it's price you have to look at.
I am not intrinsically against electric cars, they have their place, for some people but I see no advantage in fractions of a second over having a better, more characterful car you don't have to worry about the range on.
I could make do with a Leaf for the journeys I do but after having been in one, I just have no interest in owning one.
If it weren't for leases, I doubt they would sell any.
Besides which, if you're actually "flooring it" on the EV, every time you want to get to 30, to get that "advantage", your range is going to diminish rapidly.

You don't have to floor it, however hard you press the accelerator as long as you do the same in the non-EV the difference remains.silver1011 said:

if you are in a place where 30mph is the limit then who cares about acceleration...

For people who enjoy the experience of driving? I'm noticing more eco-warriors posting about how EV's are the future and how horrible and polluting IC cars are.
Yes we need to think about kittens etc. but there is far more to saving the planet than just car pollution - which I won't pretend to understand.
However, right now I will find far more excitement in driving a mk4 Supra TT than any Tesla. Sure the Tesla is faster but I couldn't care less.
