Evening all.

My neighbour has a new XC90 T8 which as most of you probably know is a plug in hybrid. Stunning looking bit of kit but it doesn't half make a racket when its charging, it sounds like a kebab shop is outside with extractors going full pelt! Google was my friend and it transpires that there are fans on the vehicle that help to cool the batteries. I fully understand that these vehicles are better for the environment from an emissions pollution perspective however it seems that the trade off is a big increase in noise pollution! Sitting in the garden or lying in bed with a window open isn't quite the same. Granted he pulls away much more quietly in the morning but I would happily trade 10 seconds of rattle twice a day versus (in the warmer weather) noise that comes and goes over a period of hours.

Is this XC specific or are plug in or full ev's similarly noisy? If the whole estate had a couple each on the drive I imagine the place would sound like an industrial estate!

Mine can be noisy when it first starts charging after it's been run on leccy but soon goes quiet. It does also make whirring noises during its "warm-up" phase on the run up to a scheduled departure.

Neither noise is intrusive though.

My outlander is silent when charging at home. When I have used a DC rapid charger the fans have sometimes come on to cool the batteries.

My ZOE makes a high-pitched whistling noise while charging, if you were near to the car you'd hear it.
Also the fans make a right racket when preheating the cabin from cold
