It's a US department of energy / GM competition, and the engineering students had to build a fully working hybrid car. The 3 teams in the article all replaced the standard V6 with a 4 cylinder, and had to make the EV motor and transmission work. 45 mile EV range and 5 second 0-60 isn't bad for a bunch of students
