Well I was at a client today who have had 10 EV points installed and they are all getting work swipe cards to access them.... Guess why?

Well HR have deemed it to be a BIK and as such whoever uses the in work charge points will be paying tax for it. Now I've no idea how much that will actually equate to but thought I'd share this with EV users as no doubt other companies will be doing the same either already no or in the near future.

Is the bik going to be the electricity supplied? If so then that's nonsense - I have confirms it with a tax specialist lecturer and also a partner in a firm of accountants that there is no taxable benefit from electricity supplied on a company car. Electricity is not a fuel per hmrc so there is no way it can be taxed. Of course that doesn't necessarily mean that hmrc will agree...

There is no fuel charge. Don't think you can stretch that to say there is no BIK.

Here is the document I found on the topic https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploa...

I think the company are covering their Arse and basically calculating the £ spent on the electric per charge then that's the BIK.

I did think this is somewhat overkill and what would be a minuscule benefit - but these days when suppliers give you something or a fun day anything over £50 has to be formally declared for bribery rules (in theory people should that is..)

Thanks that's usefull - will share that with the client as their HR seems adamant BIK is due.

That document says there is a bik if a private car is charged there. So no bik if it's a company electric car...
