Great package but the high voltage battery assembly our new GTE failed with no warning after only 5 months of gentle use. A sensor failure rendered the whole assembly U/S. Hi-v battery replaced (2 months) but VW tightlipped and offered no comfort re future reliability. New tech is a great idea but remians unproven.

From your post it sounds as if VW picked up the tab OK and fixed it.

Their web site states that the hybrid battery is under warranty for 8 years of 99,000 miles.

Not exactly a disaster surely.

I can think of examples of similarly aged / used petrol / diesel cars that have broken down to similar effect.

As long as the warranty sorts it quickly and with minimal inconvenience I wouldn't be too worried, whatever the power source.
