SO lots of rumours about this for a while but its' finally offical.

The Nissan Leaf in it's current shape is getting a 25% bigger battery, and real life range is now more than 100 miles....

The EPA rating for range is amazingly accurate, the previous Leaf was rated at 84 miles (which is what I'm getting in real life use) the new one at 107 miles. The increase in range may not sound massive, but for me it's the difference between having to not-stop to recharge on my monthly trip to see the parents who live 100 miles away.

The new battery pack is the same size as the old one and only weighs 20kg more despite the increase in charge capacity, and the price of the car remains the same - Given the battery packs are the same size/shape its likely current Leafs can be 'retrofited' with newer packs in the future.

uture rumours suggest Nissan have a even higher capacity battery ready to go into the next generation Leaf due some time in 2017/18.

Just saw the announcement. Rather frustratingly the dealer couldn't/wouldn't confirm this and so my brother in law and I ordered two Teknas a couple of weeks ago. Ho hum...

The cheapest 30kWh model is £25k, not sure what deal your brother got but am sure it's a lot cheaper than that. Delivery also doesn't start till 2016. So if the current Leaf has enough range for your brother it's no big deal.

Nissan is hinting there is more range to come and I'm pretty sure we'll see a bigger boost to range come 2017-18.

any news that the en-v (van) that shares it's tech with the leaf will get this upgrade?

It'd probably be a serious contender for me then; although I typically do 30-40 miles a day I need a minimum of about 80 and the current vans "100" won't give me this when laden.

I'd ask the local nissan dealer but they seemed quite put out enough by me asking to test drive one- do they earn very little on sales of these or something?...

I read somewhere recently that the battery upgrade is not backwards compatible?
