I do all my charging from home on the Leaf with the supplied 3 pin plug. It works ok, a bit slow but that's not a problem.

I've been boasting how cheap this car is to run to loads of people recently, even if I pay for all the charges. I thought I best check our electric usage, and it's certainly up this month (first month) but not too scary! However, I checked what I'm paying for electric and it's a rather unhealthy 15p per KWH!!! Not quite as super cheap as I'd thought!

What is everyone else paying for their electric. A quick comparison website suggests I can reduce that to 10p per KWH without much hassle, which would certainly help. I'm considering Economy 7 too, but as my wife is at home a few days a week the trade off against the day rate may not be worth the switch.

Economy 7 might still be a good bet: the often quoted figure is that for it to be viable you need to make sure 30% of your usage is overnight.
It might be worth dusting off a calculator and a barmat to see whether that 30% figure is still valid.

After you've got that percentage, it's time to see how much of the big consumers you can shift to the night. Does your washing machine and dishwasher have a timer? Do you use a tumble dryer? Do you use electricity for heating or hot water?

Also, when is "night" in your electricity region? In Manchester it's split into two; 22:30-00:30 and 02:30-07:30.

It might be that when you know all of this you can judge Economy 7 a bit better, and despite someone being home they're using such a pittance of power that it doesn't matter.

I paid £40 to have an E7 meter fitted in anticipation of the Leaf. We use 240 kWh a month normally, the Leaf used up 175kWh last months, so if we switched some of the washing machine/dishwasher stuff to E7, it would have saved money. But as it turns out because of how many free public chargers are around, I've only used 33 kWh of my own electricity since getting the 7 weeks ago Leaf

When I swap the Leaf for a Tesla, E7 will 100% make sense, given the size of the Tesla battery, but for now free public charging is letting me run the Leaf for close or 0.5p/mile in electricity/fuel costs!!

But if you can't organise your main appliances like washing / heating to go through the night 10p is what i pay.

I will be charging my electric car via the solar panels in the day when the opportunity arises.

This only works for me due to the fact i work at home quite a bit and have the flexibility to set the power draw in relation to what the panels are producing.

28p peak, 14p off peak, 10p overnight on the rare occasion i charge at home it gets done overnight although most weeks i get by using free public chargers. I think i'm up to 6 charges at home since the start of january and 2400 miles.

I've clocked up 35,000 miles in two EV's over the past 3.5 yrs. 99% of the time this has been on E7 at night, mostly for an hour or two as I average about 30 miles a day. Worst case they will be 'full' by the morning, but its rare that I do 250+ miles a day !

I've only used the free charging at motorway services maybe half dozen times, mostly when taking a week long break up to the Lakes or down to Cornwall, doing perhaps 1000+ miles in a week. Using Superchargers is amazing as they are nearly 20 times faster than at home, and because they are so quick we did nearly 750 miles in 48 hrs recently, stopping twice to charge up whilst taking a lunch break and the car was full before we were both times.

E7 rate at home is 6p / KwH, so those 35k miles in 3.5 yrs has averaged out at about £175 per year without splitting hairs! Amazing.

So, when you get addictive supercar acceleration coupled with <£200 a year 'fuel' cost its an utter no brainer decision, especially when compared to my last car 'of comparable performance' which averaged 14mpg (14 !!) and would have cost me about £14,000 in petrol alone by now, and a further £1.75k in road tax yadda yadda.

Our suppliers E7 rate is 6p/kWh, current non-E7 rate is 12p/kWh. Maybe I stop been tight and just charge the car up at home

This thread prompted me to look at my tarrif and I'll be damned, I was paying 14.5p kw/h!
Have now changed to economy 7 at 5p kw/h between 12-7 and daytime rate of 15p kw/h. I'll now work out how to program the auto charging timer and start making use of cheaper lektrickery.

Similar to me then! We're in a culture where customer loyalty isn't rewarded so you have to review/barter/haggle/research etc etc every year on everything!!

I've probably not got the best deals but I've knocked a £5 off my phone, £15 off Virgin per month recently and my car insurance is due soon. It all adds up.

I'm not sure E7 will work for my, some rough sums suggest we'd have to be quite careful to make the most of it, and with the wife and 3 kids at home for much of the day it's too close to bother!

Luckily we have the feed for the two cars coming from our annex where my mother lives so we can put her on E7 as she hardly uses any electricity at all. For us in the main house I managed to get a 12 month fixed price of 10.5p kw/h from EON so went for it.
