slightly fed up with the range on our leaf in this weather.

today from fully charged i drove somewhere in the region of 35 miles, eco mode most of the time, heater on for about half the time. mostly 30-50 mph.

i got back home with about 8 miles showing.

it makes only the nearest towns viable at this time of year.

How cold is it where you are? I'd have thought that's too low, even for winter...?

Yes, seems too low. I did 28 miles this morning, about 16 on the motorway and I have 45% left which the GOM says should give me between 35 and 42 miles.

-2 degrees according to the car.

was about 3c when i went out.

we've had the car for two years now, and from our experience, we're getting a max of about 60-65m in summer and 40-45m in winter.

Around 50 miles range in freezing temp is about right for a first gen Leaf (and that's driving moderately with the climate control set below 20). Do you have a facelift Leaf with the more efficient heater? (Acenta or Tekna)

first gen...

i notice their ads on the radio claim 120+ miles.... can second gen really achieve this? what is so different? is it just battery technology?

I can't remember what nissan claimed at the time we bought ours, but the salesman thought 80m would be doable in real world driving. we've never reached anything like that.

i notice they have also listed new batteries at just under 5k. when the time comes, can you fit a later pack to an early car?

65 miles is a more realistic summer driving range for a gen 1 Leaf.
Second gen has the same battery but lower weight and a bit more efficient electronics. So warm weather range should be slightly better. Acenta and Tekna variants have a more efficient heater, so they won't lose as much range in cold weather. Be interesting to hear some real world experience of the winter range in one.

Sounds about right to me. Bear in mind the software has been updated so the range estimator is more conservative...it is still over optimistic when fully charged, but apparently there is now a "hidden" reserve at the other end, so zero miles is not really empty - but I'm too chicken to test it.

Pop a jerrycan of electricity in the boot and give it a try.

that may be true.. the OH drove about 8m the other day on empty and got home without seeing the turtle.

i can appreciate why they have a reserve, but the other hand, a more accurate actual range would improve the usability. I don't want to 'trial' what's in reserve.

the range issue has relegated the leaf to very local use.

Very helpful thanks!
How many miles have you done "very locally"?

My new Zoe can manage 50 miles at 0 to 2 degrees temp to a charge. That's not using eco and me driving it like a tit. If I used eco I recon I could get 60 miles easy enough. Of course Zoe is a bit slower than a leaf!

What does seem to kill the range though is motorways above 60 mph.

Zoe has an efficient heater. Also a Leaf sized battery in a smaller car...a good choice!

We had a leaf on trial for a week recently, and got 70/80 miles in mixed use. Mainly eco mode and not much use of the (more efficient) heater (it was a bit warmer then). Dash said circa 95 miles when it was full.

Our Leaf Acenta manages 60 miles with ease at this time of year. Gentle driving of course, with a mix of road types. The sweet spot for range is at about 50mph. Going over 60 does make a big difference.

As ever, you shouldn't buy a Leaf it it doesn't suit your driving style. For us it's in and out of town 1-3 times each day, and then me taking it to work on a 60 mile round trip occasionally.

Do the leafs have heated seats? When I test drove an i3 and had a conversation with the salesmen he said heated seats were way more efficient than the heater and to use them as much as possible and cut back on the heater.
On its auto warmup setting, the i3 warms the cabin on a timer via the seats, not the blower apparently.
