Changing taxation class from Electric to Petrol
Discussion
Evenin' all,
We have acquired an electric smart car without the big electric bit and its' transmission. We want to fit it with a smart petrol engine and it's transmission.
In other words we want to go from fossil fuel to dinosaur juice. Solid fuel to liquid. Emissions in my back yard and not somebody else's. Anthracite-fired power-station-fuel to elixir of the desert. I don't want to worry if Didcot burns down or not. Etc, etc.
Can we expect any problems? Have laws been put in place to prevent this sort of thing? Have the greens ensured that perfectly good cars must be scrapped (again) to save the planet?
And how would the co2 level be determined?
Any advice greatly appreciated, and sorry for the bad jokes. (Any more I need hear about? )

Quite simple
The engine goes from 0cc to under 1600cc
So you pay the same tax as a per 2001 car under 1600cc
Or where we meant to be really angry and burn our ethnic peace sandals.
As a trolling effort it is less the 1 out of 10
It was all meant as a joke (and I'd thought I was very funny ) as I'm actually quite a fan of EVs, though not a fan of BS and the "zero emissions" nonsense. The engine goes from 0cc to under 1600cc

I'd have loved to have acquired a cheap electric smart ready to use, and use it I would have done, but instead we have acquired a very cheap motorless electric smart.
We have enough parts of smart engine to put one together and fit it into the car. The car has only done 3,000 miles. The wiring has taken some time to sort out but I have only just considered that the muppet greens might have some legislation in place meaning that perfectly good cars have to be dumped top save the planet. Seems my fears were unjustified, hopefully.
Am I right to think that pre-2001 is pre- tax band which means the annual tax might be a few quid, as in a hundred or two?
Also, if it's of interest, this month's Car Mechanics magazine https://www.facebook.com/pages/Car-Mechanics/12367... has began a series on hybrids and EVs and this month is very much singing the praises of the Prius.

What would be the consequences of not changing the V5c to reflect the petrol engine? Aside from not having to pay VED.
I don't know, but I'm going to try to find out, starting with presenting the car for MOT. As it's a smart car few garages bother to actually look at the engine at MOT, and often don't know where it is. I sprinted a smart roadster last year, and in such competetions the engine is supposed to be checked.
So at one meeting the conversation went:
Scrutineer: "Engine?"
Me: "Yes?"
Scrutineer: "I presume it's got one".
Me: "Yes".
Scrutineer: "Don't bother showing it me then, I wouldn't know what I'm looking at".
We'll see what the MOT says or does.
