Why don't manufacturers give an LPG option from the factory?

I was going to expand on the question, but I think it's all in the title really.

I believe Vauxhall once did, though not sure if they still do.

The old Vauxhall Astra Dual Fuel? Seemed like a pointless car to LPG....

R+D, infastructure, training, parts ordering, ongoing servicing liability etc cost more than it is worth to offer the option.

I'm guessing.

I think a few have over the years. They never seem to sell very well, though.

This is my expert area !!!!

vauxhalls did

They used a system called koltec necam and quite frankly ..... It was rubbish

Because of the poor quality of gas in the UK the injectors used to get clogged up

A new set of injectors from vauxhalls were £960+vat

Yes you read that right

That's with no guarantee that they would work. It could actually be something else that had broken but the injectors were first port of call

Anyway the full price for a FULL LPG system to be fitted and certified is £1400 with a 2 year warranty

So ita cheaper to rip it out and start again

The reason why Vauxhalls have stopped doing lpg cars is because the gas systems were breaking down under warranty and it was costing them a fortune

The did however retry the idea with a BRC system instead which is a much better system. This would be in the car from new but not fitted at the factory

Anyway they did it on a load of new insignias

The system worked perfectly apart from one thing

The new Vauxhall engine is a vvti and burns out seats and valves whilst on LPG

So again back to square one. Only this time the cars all needed new cylinder heads instead

Hope this is enough info :-P

Wow, no-one at Vauxhall knew about Flash Lube systems?. Did the person in charge of choosing the new BRC LPG system even know what LPG is?.hehe

I forgot to mention the flashlube bit

They all had the electronic flashlubes installed burning a bottle of oil every 2000miles and still burnt seats and valves

I also know someone who has converted one with the dripfeed flashlube and even left it running slightly rich on gas and it did the exact same thing

Get yourself a Lada Niva then, they import them brand spanking new with an LPG option.

Really cant see the point of LPG. If you cant afford to run the car on its proper fuel then dont buy it! A lot of people say why is your Rangie not LPG and I say to them its not supposed to be. If that was the best option then the car would come direct from the factory like that and would run solely on LPG like a forklift does. It just smacks of penny pinching and people possibly living beyond their means, plus it will eventually ruin your engine one way or another.

Would dearly love someone to explain to me why valve stem regression on engines designed for unleaded is anything to do with it being a "dry burning fuel" and not just a symptom of improper spark and timing adjustment.

Do we know/have an idea of what's happening with LPG duty in 2015 yet?

I looked at a new Volvo dual fuel car a few years ago - you only got half the normal size tank of petrol & lpg - which meant I'd only make two days between fill ups on LPG (assuming there was a garage that sold it close). Then when I did the sums, it didn't really work out much difference than a diesel for running (though petrol & diesel has gone up a lot since then)

Whats that supposed to mean? I know its stretching it a bit but would you put LPG on a rolls Royce? No you would not even think about it. So why fit it on say a Jaguar or a Seven series BMW for example. I will stick by my guns and maintain that if its that good manufactures would all be jumping on the band wagon and offering it from the factory, but obviously the demand is not there. It only comes into play in the second hand market where people cant afford to put the petrol in, coming back around again to my original statement about living right upto or beyond their means, if they have to scrimp on the fuel what else gets left out? Cheapo ditchfinder tyres, poor servicing?

Had an LPG RR classic LSE in the past. Was in very good condition and the old boy that owned it had the conversion done.

Ran well on it but every now and then it would pre detonate in the plenum chamber and the easiest way for the explosion to escape was through the air box on the front nearside of the bonnet.

Scared the st out of me the first time it happened and dented the bonnet from the inside out. After it happening a number of times and getting fed up with the tank in the boot I had it all removed.

Waste of time in my opinion unless they have improved massively. Would need a lot of convincing now to try it again.

Take a bow Evo. Look at all the misguided st you could have rectified with the LPG'd Alpina you had, but nah, canned it after a couple of months...
