MG made a £54million profit in the UK last year (£4.2m the year before). Revenue of £1bilion, I'd say they are doing something right.
5% profit margin isn't exactly amazing
It is a very good profit if growth and volume is your game.
Plus MG UK won't be buying cars at cost, SAIC in China will be making an additional profit on each car sold here.

BYD have ordered their own fleet of ships so plan to be exporting a lot more cars.

Do main dealers buy cars at cost? I thought they were franchises that paid wholesale and made profit on the difference between wholesale and retail.

Or are you saying MG UK buy stock at wholesale, sell to franchise's with markup and the dealers add theirs?

When the Chinese have driven every other car manufacturer out of business and/or bought the remains of peanuts using CCP money, how will you feel?
Nothing. Nothing at all. Why would anyone care about who owns what? We de-industrialised and paid that heavy bill 30 years ago. I guess if we did feel bad then we could use a few quid from the tens of £thousands we haven't had to pay propping up bent car companies to send a few condolence cards over the Channel?

Seriously, normal cars are nothing more than generic white goods, even more so once they all have the identical drivetrain and are differentiated by badges and TV size alone. Who cares where they're cobbled together? They just need to be sold at the correct price.

BYD have surpassed Tesla in China at the end of the year and have greater margins and production capacity.

Would be quite beneficial to have them arrive in the U.K. with a target of taking sales from Tesla as it would create an excellent price war in the sector.

Need more businesses like MG to start fighting for market share and force prices down and some innovation.

I read that BYD sales include hybrids, making Tesla still significantly in the lead for now.

BYD do sell hybrids, but they also sold more pure EVs than Tesla did.

It's also worth noting that while the Model 3 is Tesla's cheapest car the Seal is among BYD's most expensive.

If BYD manage to establish a brand footing in the U.K. with the Seal then it paves the way for them to pour much cheaper models into the U.K. market.

Frankly the base hybrid version of the Seal looks a good car. That sells for just over £15k in China. That's not to say stuff made for the Chinese market is the same as what is made for export but it does highlight the reality that these firms can build usable hybrids and EVs for a fraction of what the incumbent manufacturers can and even undercut Tesla.

It's no wonder so much anti China rhetoric is being funded and pumped out along with so much being spent on lobbying for more and more regulations that favour European consumers being forced to pay many £thousands more than they need to for a box to get from A to B.

Meanwhile they fund their idiot attack dog to sacrifice his people and economy to accelerate us away from oil and gas to increase demand?

Volvo own around 48% of Polestar and are looking to sell their stake to Geeley, all gets a bit confusing as Volvo are owned by Geeley.

Already part of Geely via Volvo who remain the core shareholder after the float. Although if the share price falls any further I might buy them just to keep my other car investments company next to the toilet roll. biggrin

Maybe ask Geely for a twofer and get Aston Martin also.

Another Chinese state owned car manufacturer to add to the list of possible infiltrators into the UK market - Chery.
Currently in South Africa and seen quite a few knocking around - I doubt there’ll be any EV’s though as South Africa has its own issues with power supply!

They were not available on our Salary Sacrifice scheme but I would have been seriously tempted if it had undercut a Model 3 by a decent margin.

I find that hard to believe given MBs association with Smart which has new #1 and #3 EVs.

That's a shout, I wonder when they'll be available on the wife's SS scheme? I'd hope for some good deals but I guess they are still quite new. Maybe BYD will push some deals to the lease comapnaies to get a load out onto the market?
