If we're talking about EV only - Tesla were European No1 for a long time, until VAG took their crown, which they've now had for the last couple of years. As I understand it, Tesla have pulled closer to VAG this year with aggressive price cuts so that they're pretty much neck and neck at the minute.

You mention Tesla growing its manufacturing capacity. If we go back to the OP of this thread, so have VW, and they are now in a position of having too much capacity. Tesla are the same, with German factory underutilised - the extra sales growth just isn't coming in the numbers Tesla and VW expected.

IMO, one of the most compelling EV's for the UK right now is the EX30 from Volvo. Made in China with the credible and well regarded Volvo badge. If I was VW head of Europe, I would be more worried about that Volvo offering than Tesla, who seem to have little interest in product development, with far too much focus on the Cybertruck for North America.

I bought an ID3 in January. Its not bad but I would drop it for the new Volvo in a heartbeat. Its just a better overall packaged car (assuming it doesn't drive like a pig) Better than MG made in China, better than pretty much everything in that price area. In fact, its better than a Model 3, which is in a more expensive price bracket than a EX30.
The Volvo s interesting and not too heavy but still has an SUV look. Give me a hatchback or estate any day.

With economic growth at best flat and high inflation in many European countries including the UK it's hardly surprising car sales are being impacted.

The Volvo is an interesting one, I'd considered one but discounted it as there is no back seat space.

There is a sub brand car Zeekr I believe that's the same car underneath except better. There's no space in the back of the Volvo but the Zeekr actually has much better space yet will be marketed as a cheaper car.

Right now, I'd choose the new MG4 hot hatch over a Cupra born if I was buying one now.

It's likely that when I change my Golf in two years the id2/e-polo will be out. So should the Tesla model 2 so we will see how they compare.

At the moment, the Tesla charging network is a big advantage over other EVs but I can't be doing with all the problems their cars have and issues people have getting them addressed. If they chose to open the network to other manufacturers like they are doing in the US that advantage goes away unless they build many more superchargers.

In comparison they make the issues with id3's to be completely insignificant.

VW has the dealer network throughout Europe, so wherever I travel I can find a dealer and just drop in. That's a big advantage.

That seems like an interesting strategic move. VW appear at quite a loss when it comes to technology and it's an interesting little window into the difference between the Herman economy and those of say the US and China which have much more robust tech elements alongside their engineering element. It also puts VW as piggy in the middle after previously buying a Chinese firm to get hold of much needed tech while also aiming to ramp up production in China and to import the cheaper Chinese built cars to other markets.

It almost sounds like VW finally did a clever thing as they look to adapt to a world of electric mobility!

Indeed.

I like the fact that they can use the software immediately (which runs on Nvidia's auto platform, if I recall...). Not that they've got any problems with their existing software stack, of course. No, siree.

I wonder which VW product will get it first and if it will be reserved for the electric vehicles. (And, therefore, would Ford also get it? Interesting...)
