Different front end without a grille

Crucially (if you're into biking) it has a small towing capacity so you can add a towbar legally for a bike rack

Spec changed too.

Premium and Premium SE levels became Premium and Ultimate trim. I think there's very little difference between the old Premium SE and new Ultimate trims. Both very well equipped.

They're good fun. I tried one before ultimately going for a Model 3 Long Range. They're a bit of a warm/hot hatch.

For me, the £17k-£18k asking price on those for a lightly used 2021 model 64kWh Ultimate spec was too close to what i could get a slightly older and slightly more used Tesla with over twice the power and similar efficiency and range.

Warranty was a consideration, but the Model 3 Long Range has 8 yrs and 120k miles on the battery and motors.

Partly my reasoning for Tesla over Kona was depreciation. At the end of the day the Kona is a 200bhp small SUV with front wheel drive. It's not got much to differentiate it to keep the values up. It's just like any other EV. The Tesla on the other hand has a better, lower, more sport driving position, 4WD, over 400bhp and huge grin factor. It felt night and day compared to the Kona.
Thanks for that. I had found a nice looking 22 Kona Ultimate in a local Hyundai dealer with 20K miles at £22K. From Autotrader I coudl see it'd been there a couple of months - I guess the price and mileage putting people off.

Not bothered by the mileage - we could well be putting another 60K on it in 3yrs so its starting mileage doesn't make a lot of difference. Ad suggested 5yrs approved warranty.

Looked for the ad today and it's gone, but then I found the car at another of the dealer groups branches marked as "coming soon". They could have just changed the location in the ad and it grates a bit that they're trying to pretend it's a new arrival.

Something of a thread revival but with the used EV market a few months more matured I find myself increasingly keeping an eye on this.

I do two/three 200 mile round trips a week (100 miles door to door, 90 miles of which is Motorway/Dual Carriageway), all year round, circa 20k a year last year. Currently in a 2.0 '14 plate Insignia which, in fairness to it, does the job as well as I could ask for but is looking leggy now and whilst I'm not in a rush to change, I am considering it.

Currently have another EV (iPace) so already an IOG customer and have a Home Charger installed so the pain of migrating across is minimal.

Question is, would a facelift 2021 64kWh Kona do the business?

'21 plated facelift models with circa 30-40k are increasingly being marketed between £14-£15K and with a WLTP of 300 (up from 279 on the pre facelift) I am wondering if 200 is feasible.

Charging on the return leg is possible but would rather avoid (and no workplace charging at present) and the only natural step up from here would be a M3LR in terms of range?

Tend to cruise at 70, up to 75 as and when. Aware they aren't the biggest but not really a concern, just needs to plod up and down the motorway with as minimal fuss as possible.
Our pre facelift Kona would do an easy 220 in Winter and 280 in the Summer.

So I reckon the face-lift will easily do 200 miles all year round even at 70-75.
Our 2019 Kona will manage 220 miles all year round….250-260 in summer, I think the facelift one ought to do 20-30 more.
Also….try “hypermiling” behind the odd truck or just larger SUV - adaptive cruise makes that pretty safe and easy, you can gain miles doing that on a motorway instead of pushing all the air out of your way by yourself hehe

I keep telling myself I'm going to get a long range M3, but I just keep watching the prices come down like some stock market stand-off.

Long Range models with under 100k are under £15k now. That's a lot of car for the money.

But furthermore, facelift MG5 61.1kwh Estate cars are touching £10k (!) and having recently driven one of these I was very impressed, certainly a much more practical car.

I'm really leaning to the MG5...

I'm not sure it is. While the MG has a more useful shape, the 3s boot is massive, with even more storage under the floor and in the front.

Having owned an MG ZS Ev and a Model 3 the Tesla is an order of magnitude better in almost every other way too.

I’m not a fan of the mg5, but there’s a individual who posts on Twitter about a fleet of high mileage ones they are buying and running for peanuts.

Cleevely EV, they use them as vans.

Quite impressive to be fair, but I'd still take a 3 LR over one.

Have to say it is between this and holding out for an M3LR (whilst searching for pennies down the back of the sofa to cover the gap).

Seemingly immense value for money at the moment, solid allround package.

Similar car but slightly bigger, went Kia eNiro. I'll admit it was an experiment I was prepared to go back to ICE. I didn't want to sink too much so the Kia kept my options open if I didn't like it. I like it. Not impressed with the dashboard rattle after a Lexus but I can live with it. That has nothing to do with ICE vs EV.

I've been taking on interior design CAD projects and then managing the builds, can the M3 really fit in as much as the MG5 can? I don't want to own a van again, so would rather have a car which can, when needed, carry some cargo, I got to use an MG5 and really liked it.

I found the seats in the MG5 the most unexpected part, incredibly comfortable. I've heard the M3 seats are awful.

I've not measured it, but it feels that way. Particularly if you have lots of smaller items, I have to carry round PPE, tools and spares for work and it all fits neatly into the frunk and the storage compartment under the boot floor, leaving the main bit of the boot basically empty.

Having driven both and say the Model 3 seats are better, as they have more adjustability. That's not to say the MG ones are bad though.

Don't get me wrong I do like the MG5 as a utility car, I nearly bought a new one when they were cheap a few years back, but ended up with a ZS for the extra range. We looked again as a 2nd hand buy last year to replace a stolen car, but they were (at that point) a little too expensive still, plus the wife wanted something smaller, so we ended up with a Zoe.

Another few grand on the 15k budget will get you some nice looking cars, Ipace (if you're ok with JLR it would seem) and polestar.

Have you seen the I-Pace thread? Great EVs, but most people seem to say ‘ never again’.

I have yes, it seems to have some reliability issues, but JLR themselves seem to be the main problem!
