No idea but there is a McLaren approved 12C in the network at £74k with 11,000 miles.

Thorney have a 47,000 miler for £79k and a 24,000 miler at £86k.

I understand specs vary but seems like a vast disparity.

I understand the Thorney cars also only come with 3 months warranty too, unless you pay or negotiate the full year coverage.

As a Thorney customer (pickup tomorrow) I'd say they are great value for the slightly nervous first time supercar purchaser. The cars are brought up to perfect condition with all issues resolved and an all in 3 month warranty backed by themselves, not an insurance company.

John and Tony are technical and incredibly knowledgable and great contributors to the McLaren community, especially for cars/owners not covered by the McLaren dealer network.

For me an extra £5k or so over the lower prices is a price worth paying for the peace of mind it gives me.

Thorney cars are on SOR with prices set by the owner. Some owners will be more realistic than others regarding the price. Thorney get an upfront fee for selling the car of £4500, so if someone wants to sell their car for an unrealistic price I'm sure Thorney will let them.

All their cars come with a 3-month warranty with the option to extend. They will have had their full pre-warranty inspection and had any issues resolved prior to sale, which is what you are really paying for over a car from a lesser dealer or private sale.

Thorneys own website for potential sellers says "if it hasn’t sold in 2 months its priced wrong". 6 of their cars have been on sale for over 6 months, so clearly some sellers don't take that to heart.

I agree - particularly when Alastair Bols is selling great examples for £80k - no warranty but I know that he doesn't sell anything that hasn't passed a recent Mclaren/specialist inspection.

They do have a warranty, which you can pay to extend to a year if you wish

I think perhaps part of the reason the market looks confusing is that asking price has little to do with age or mileage. The difference between 8 and 10 years old isn't that significant and I'm not aware of any running improvements being made. And a car that's been used and maintained is often a better bet than one that's been laid up, so at this age a four-digit odo reading is a mixed blessing.

Another thing is that several cars have been advertised for over a year; the average ad age on AT is 5 months. So the asking prices may represent different levels of realism.

Most of the cars are between £80k and £90k, so I'd start looking in that range. Given how long some cars have been for sale I'd also look at some higher priced examples with a view to negotiating a chunk off if the car looks decent.

Condition first I think, as small things can be pricey to put right. Cosmetic condition is important, as is mechanical condition and service history. I'd want an independent inspection on any 650S. Basically these cars left the showroom a decade ago, and will have diverged considerably in condition since then based on who's owned them, how they've been used, and who's maintained them.

Brake disc condition could account for ~£10k.

I'd want a car that's at had oil changes by mileage at the bare minimum to avoid storing up trouble.


Spec is also partly taste, there may be specific things you're after. I think carbon-fibre bits add some value generally. But that would be secondary to me.

however at circa £90k a 650s must be the best buy out there for the money?
