Dimensions for door opening
Discussion
Hi there,
I currently have a BMW i8 coupe so I know how unconventional car doors can sometimes be awkward.
I am currently building a new garage and have door opening dimensions for an MP4 as I might get one to replace the BMW in the future. However, I am keen to future proof as much as possible, so would like to know if models subsequent to the MP4 need more or less space (both sideways and above).
Any help appreciated.
Thanks

I believe these are the overall dimensions with mirrors and one door open, in mm.
Please correct if anyone knows differently.
I'm 99% sure there are no significant differences between body variants (S/C/GT/LT/Spider).
Edit - standardised on width with mirrors and one door open, changing some figures.

Thanks, this is really helpful, it's a second garage and I don't have unlimited space to make it as big as I would ideally like. Do you happen to know if the width figure takes into account the wing wirrors? Thanks again

Good point, I've updated my original post and included mirrors in all the one door open figures.Note that the mirrors question makes only a minor difference to actual width. The reason is that McLaren mirrors don't "fold" exactly, the mirror unit just pivots 90 degrees on its stalk. On my 570 for instance, it's 2095mm mirrors out, and only drops 5cm to 2045mm with them folded. So you save precisely one inch on each side - barely worth pressing the button
The above one-door-open widths are from the mirror on the passenger side to the extremity of the open driver's door opposite; obviously you want whatever margin you need between panelwork and brickwork on the passenger side, plus clearance to the door on the drivers'. It is possible to squeeze in without the door being fully open, but most people will need it not far off fully open to get in I reckon.
My garage has ~280cm of effective interior width, with a ~235cm wide door opening, and that's about right for the 570. It's helpful that the door is offset, so the extra width of the interior is nearly all on one side and thus useful for opening the door without needing to come in at an angle.

I had mine built offset too. 2.4m door pushed to one side so I could get a bench and tool racks etc along one side and still plenty of room for a car, although mine is over 4m wide anyway. What I did notice is it looked wrong on the drawing, so I had the ridge moved to match the centre of the doors (doord, not roller shutter), which them made the roof angles different on the 2 sides, so it limited the choice of coverings.
What I really wish is I'd made it longer, plenty of room for a car, but the row of garden equipment takes up room and another 2 feet would have allowed the garden furniture to come in for the winter.
Guys - how have you found this compared to previous cars in your garage? I can partially open my 2m wide current car's door until it touches the garage wall pad and swing myself out. Is that likely also to be the case with a Mc? Door probably opening 60cm further from car to wall. Thx

I think the extra sideways clearance required beside the car to open the door fully is720 | 30cm |
Artura | 40cm |
12C/650 | 50cm |
570 | 57cm |
GT | 60cm |
Edit - reduced figures for 720 & Artura as had wrongly added mirrors
This is what a 570GT in a 280cm wide garage looks like, door is open fully, no issues getting in and out.

FYI coupe doors open tighter to the car than spider doors, i've had both in the tiniest garage you could imagine and managed just fine, (i do have carpet on the wall about waist height up to head height as that is where it would touch, and mine does touch occasionally but nothing that would be a problem on carpet. also have PPF on the doors if there ever was a problem but really they are quite tight opening doors
